rent an unfurnished property otherwise you will face a big bill for cat scratches to the furniture - and that is not fair "wear and tear" so yes you would be liable for it in full.0

That's generally the plan since we already have most the furniture we need from our current places, barring a sofa so far.0 -
I'm a LL and I accept one dog - but not cats, simply because of the experience of a friend of mine who let to someone with 2 cats. They left claw marks on the door frames of most rooms (presumably sharpening their claws); they left rips in the long curtains, one of the blinds was half pulled down, and they had peed on the carpet to the extent that even when she threw out the carpet (which was only 2 years old), the smell had soaked through to the floorboards beneath, and some of them had to be replaced. Not surprisingly, the tenant lost most of her deposit. So, be careful what you wish for.
Good luck with your search. (Sorry to sound so negative).
Oh my, that sounds dreadful! I'm so sorry they had to go through that, I can imagine how angry you'd be! It sounds like the tenants didn't have enough toys, beds, scratching posts etc to keep them occupied, but I guess it can't be maintained all the time as cats will be cats. Eep, and totally understandable why she'd lose the deposit, that's only fair!0 -
Cats are more likely to get on with bad behaviour if they are left at home whilst owners work.
The thing with deposit is that you don't get the full value of what you have to potentially replace (and rightly so) but it means that you are facing still having to replace something that you otherwise wouldn't and that comes a cost (ie. new carpet because old one can't be cleaned).
In the end, you'll be much more likely to find a LL prepared to accept cats if the property is in some need of decorating/maintenance than a newly refurbished one.0 -
We rent and had three cats when we moved. We had to pay an extra deposit for the cats and I think we have to treat the carpet when we leave. We could also fit a cat flap in the back door as long as when we leave we replace the original panel of the door. (UPVC and we could remove the original panel and replace with one with a cat flap if that makes sense).0

You have doubted wrong. I assure you we're not teenagers with no jobs etc. We're literally good to go on everything, we've just been living with our parents/siblings to save up cause it's London but now it's time to leave the nest. The cats are literally the only problem haha!
The cats are only just turning 1 so they'll be fine to adjust. To be fair, I feel like my mother wants to keep one but we'll see. :rotfl:
I'll have to check out some more direct LL ones though, thanks for the advice!
I have been looking to rent for a few months and have one cat. A lot of landlords I've found don't mind a cat but don't want dogs, so it's worth approaching the landlord/agent and asking. I've found quite a few that say "not suitable for pets" and show a big back garden. When I've queried it directly my cat has suddenly become acceptable:T. It's worth a try.
Good luck0 -
Hi,
I rent with three cats and had to pay £100 PER cat extra on the deposit. Its through an agent - who originally said no cats - but when asked the LL didn't mind so long as extra deposit paid so its always worth asking.

Good luck with the search for your new home.
I really do not understand when people have said about cats being indoor cats/litter tray/smells?
We have 3 very well behaved 'clean' cats who know where the litter tray is and that have NEVER had an accident even when ill.
Our cats also leave door frames alone. Our home also does not smell. Especially if you buy the correct cleaning solution and keep on top of the litter tray.
The key is to find the correct litter as we have been in people's houses where they go for the 'cheap' stuff and it absolutely stinks to high heaven.
Our cats get treated like absolute royalty and have the best of everything (they even eat better than us)!
Wishing you all the best, whereabouts in London are you looking for? x0 -
I've owned cats for most of my 64 years. Never had any door frames destroyed. We bought our cat a scratching post which HAS been very badly treated but that's what it's there for :rotfl:
Smelly litter trays are caused by lazy owners, not smelly cats.0 -
Murphybear - Yes!! (Unfortunately due to my phone I cannot click the 'quote' option
We bought our cats a cat tree from Wayfair I think (it's HUGE) almost floor to ceiling! I sometimes have heart failure when the 3 of them are jumping and playing around on it lol but yes scratching posts/trees are a must have. I think we've had about 4 in the last 8 years.
We have an extra large hooded tray with a filter in the bathroom.0
