I may well be making some progress out of this problem, I'm guessing that icon notification is sent by data, so if your receiving either 3G or 4G notifications via the icon or push, then you have covereage, however if you have E or GPRS - sorry iPhone terms then no notifications - I think that's a puzzle resolved but don't forget - plusnet don't support message notification and it's an iPhone problem, as you can tell I've had quite a day with them, but will email the recorded conversation with their support rep,
To a generic email address despite requesting a direct one, I would love to make the conversation public, but I'll await a personal response, it must be a mistake blaming all iPhones for being incompatible with plusnet
Edit - it's a signal problem - nothing to do with iPhones, if you have a good 3G / 4G signal you get the notification, if you don't well !!After reading PtL Vaubans Guide , please don't desert us, hang around and help others!

And rest assured from the moment I said this phone call is being recoded - it was - I feel like a wolf catching a rabbit - I do hope plusnet (spelt incorrectly by me in the early parts of the thread) do at least admit an error of judgement or I will release the recoded call to us here, if not Utube .....
As you can image I'm getting really peaved with a 'call Apple' response.
Did I ever mention that notifications worked with:
02
Three
Vodafone
....
I know there's loads of others like 'life' that my wife was a customer, but I'm listing my experience....After reading PtL Vaubans Guide , please don't desert us, hang around and help others!

didn't "life" turn into plusnet anyway.
Well hopefully once you get into a 3G/4G area you get the notification?0 -
Yeah 'life' was early plusnet and odly no problems...
This is the recording, amongst the highlights all iPhones are faulty, they won't discuss this with Apple and I can't make a complaint...

The icon is not sent by data - it is a flag that the network sets to be on/off when a message is still to be listened to. Part of the control system on the handset.0

That's very interesting - I've been on the phone again with them this morning and trying to set up a three way call with Apple - a simple solution would be a text and a manager agrees with me at plusnet - he's seeing if that could be implemented. After reading PtL Vaubans Guide , please don't desert us, hang around and help others!

The icon is basically a special text message that tells the phone to display the voicemail symbol and then remove it once the messages were listened to.
It uses the same channels as text messaging, so doesn't need good coverage nor data.
Orange and One2One (now EE) were initially called PCS and that was part of the specification. Vodafone and O2 added it later when PCS was merged into GSM.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Thanks for the technical info on how the icon is triggered, but still doesn't solve the problem, because even on 2g limited coverage the icon should still receive the hidden text message to display an alert, the only thing I can think of with your very useful and knowledgeable information is that the phones are drifting in and out of coverage whilst inside my home.
I really do appreciate the technical side to your comments and also Buzbys because knowledge of how the system is supposed to work helps when speaking to plusnetAfter reading PtL Vaubans Guide , please don't desert us, hang around and help others!
