Just to give a different perspective, as we are currently using PPL on our sale and purchase. We find that they don't usually reply to emails, and when you call you get a message saying your solicitor is unavailable. You have to press a number to speak to the team (don't press the number to leave a message) and you can then speak to someone who will be able to help, or will transfer you to your conveyancer. Yes it's a faff, but the eWay system IS good as you can see what progress (or lack of) is being made, and ring up to find what a particular email or call was about (anyone on the team can answer this). We previously used a recommended local solicitor who ignored emails, and calls went straight to voicemail and were never returned. PPL also worked throughout lockdown, and had someone in the post room to process anything sent by post to them. Compare this with many local solicitors who were furloughed or whose workforce worked exclusively from home (and probably still are, with little or no contact with any colleagues). PPL were way ahead of all the other solicitors in the chain, and our searches/contracts/queries were processed weeks before the rest of the chain, who were constantly playing catch up (much to our frustration). Based on both experiences, I would definitely choose PPL over a local solicitor next time.

I just did a remortgage through Barclays who use PPL - what a nightmare.  6 months!!!  They were horrendous, and the conveyancer dealing with our case didn't answer our emails or phone messages. And what's even worse, he sent me a great long email where he spelt "their" "there" for the entire jolly email, on about 6 different occasions.  They lost paperwork, forgot to do things, rubbish.

We’ve made the mistake of using this firm, bloody useless. We’ve been asked to send the same 3 documents 3 times now, apparently our buyers solicitors have requested these docs, when we’ve told PPL that we’ve already sent them, they check the file and say ‘oh yes, we’ve sent them over already’. Why not check our file before asking us to send them again? Communication has been poor, service has been very disappointing, we will be glad when everything finally completes then we will never have to use this shower again.

One of my buyers used them. They were awful.
You get what you pay for
  • Sounds like you got a bad one. We used them and they were fine with us, but I really think it depends on who is handling your case because it's a big office with many different conveyancers. Some of them are good, some of them are useless and it's just the luck of draw as to who handles your case so it really is a bit of a gamble.

Are you too far into the process now to switch solicitors? Our vendor started off with PPL, but it changed part way through the transaction so I think he got a bad egg there. The thing is, the solicitors he changed to were just as bad as everyone in the chain was moaning about them.

Yes, we’re too far in now. We used them because the estate agent we bought through recommended them and it seemed the easy option at the time, not the best reason for it but there you go, live and learn.
Thankfully, there is now light at the end of our tunnel 🙂
