Someone mentioned swapping lock barrels from one property to another?

The original lock on the front door to our flat was passed onto our friend when she had to change her lock after an acrimonious break-up. The new one on our flat door was swapped with the old lock on the front door of our new house when we moved. (We only moved across the road)

I'm pretty sure that my friend's old lock ended up on my sister's front door when she was living in rented accommodation. She always changed her locks on moving day too!

I've still got 2 lock barrels, with keys, sitting in my kitchen drawer. My sister is moving again soon so I daresay at least one of them will be pressed into service.

Surely we should have had a poll, as well as another thread about changing locks...?

Just make sure there's a 'CBA' option, just for me. :D

    Ta muchly. ;)

Nah not alone, I need that option too

I'm not very good with replacing things that work, even if it does mean some random walking in one day, or someone nicking all my stuff! I truly will try to force myself to change them when I move this year! I can see it's important, I'm just utterly rubbish at stuff like that.

I would oblige but I can't find an option to add a poll? ;)

...and more to the point, CBA to keep looking :D

  • Of course you should change the locks.

You have no idea who holds a key, and a theft with keys could void insurance.

Just think of it that you're also protecting yourself and not just your possessions - and that's particularly important for a woman.

Have said all along I 100% agree. I'm just rubbish at doing it! ;)

  • We did, but as others have said it's only because I spent a lot of time on this forum (lurked for over a year) that we did it as a matter of urgency on the day we completed. I mentioned it to family and friends and they were all surprised we were getting it done immediately, but again it became a "I never really thought about who else might have keys" conversation.

We always have. Have a spare Yale and mortice lock so have just swapped them over between properties over the years.

On moving day just have to change one lock so that if anyone gets in it has to be via 'breaking' and entering... once that's sorted can buy new locks and sort at leisure.

We always check gf window locks on moving day too. Can't believe how many flats in London have missing or broken window locks!

I got annoyed when I lost one of my Uncle's spare keys (somewhere in the house) but he went ahead and changed the locks just to be sure. Smart move? Or am I just being silly thinking that's OTT? (I did apologise profusely).

Ok, someone in central London manages to pick up my key. Then what?

If you knew where you lost something, you could find it - so there's a chance it's outside the house as you've not found it. For all he knows, you could have had it nicked, or someone saw you drop it and followed you back to the house. In that scenario, I would have changed them too.
