    From Shells own website..

You have to read through the marketing tosh to realise that even Shell don't know if it works, if it did they would say so!

Its not that they dont know - its that they cant guarantee it, depending on what condition your engine is in in the first place.

Its very unlikely its going to be able to decoke a cylinder head for you, for example.

I dont personally think its worth the 12p or so extra per litre, given there are other additives that you can add to a tank yourself that work out at a fraction of that.

In an ideal world yes but as I said previously a couple of tanks of V-Power now and again will help clean the fuel system etc due to the increased detergents it has.

I disagree, the 1st tank is diluted by the "normal" fuel, so has less impact than desired, only following this with continuous usage will make the "special" fuel have any affect.

Equally the amount of detergents put in the special fuels is so small, it's measured as ppm (parts per million).

Whereas using supermarket fuel and a shot of millers (50ml) in a tank of 75 litres, increases the ratio to around 7 parts per thousand (0.07%), or ten times the amount given in a "special" fuel. As well as the benefit of being much cheaper than the "special" fuels.

Again, consistent running of the detergents is key to any benefits seen, think of it as tarnish build up on copper pipes, clean them weekly = nice and shiny, clean them monthly and the tarnish builds to the point where normal cleaning will not make them shiny.

Last time I checked I had a diesel engine - not a cleaning products engine.

The only time I have ever noticed a difference with fuel was when I used to fill up using the truck pump we had on site for the wagons. Now I think we are all smart enough to realise this stuff comes out of the same tank at the refinary but we are led to believe the difference in supermarket to branded fuel is the different additives it recieves when it is delivered to the fuel station.

This fuel that was deliverd to the truck pump had nothing added to it at all. Its entirely subjective and I have no evidence but the car always seemed much happier with this diesel in the tank (it's a EURO 4 diesel btw). I no longer work there and have pretty much exclusively used asda/sainsbury fuel for the last 4 years with no issues at all on a car that now has over 200k miles on the clock. If supermarket fuel encourages "crude" build up in the engines then it would have had an effect by now.

Just for reference, the additives are injected into the fuel as the tanker is filled at the storage and distribution terminal, not at the fuel station.

Bottle of Redex every now and then. I don't bother with the recommended dosage, I just stick the whole bottle in the tank. Can usually find it cheaper in B&M and places like that.
