It's partially why I got bored of visiting Europe on holiday - there's only so many identical feeling churches and castles you can visit before getting bored of it.

Perhaps your interest in history is somewhat superficial then. As Europe has been at war for centuries. If you understand history you'll appreciate the differences that still exist even today.

Ok, there are differences, but take any British fortification built before the 1900s and compare it to any European contemporary. Now compare it to a Japanese or Arab contemprary. Which one is more different?

Ditto religious buildings. Most cathedrals, whilst different at a small level, are fundamentally the same, with the same rough structure layout and artworks, because they have the same purpose in the same religion. Now compare them to any temple in India, or South America, and so on.

I love history and find plenty of interest in Europe to go to, but it's clearly all come from a common ancenstry which isn't the case if you go somewhere that doesn't have common ancestry.

Your statement is not a question but a valid inquiry into human architecture since and before the industrial revolution. A vast many Teutonic lands let me tell you, medieval constructs with French and Byzantine influence (especially Estonia, Lithuania and Finland) and some other lesser known former USSR blocs. There is a moral and tribal kind of approach to new housing developments in Eastern Europe because they do not like individual wealth to be flaunted in the way that the British are always so eager to demonstrate the gaping-hole between rich and poor (unless you are of Tsarist royalty) for instance.

As for Japanese citizens, also share the same very moral view as Eastern Europeans - mostly reside in tower-block apartments (including wealthy business) inhabitants - they do not live in quite the capitalist dream you seem to envisage. icon4.gif

The British in particular, a rare breed of people because matters most that wealth-divide an evident factor in regards to where a person lives - nowhere in Nordic cultures or eastern European ones will you find 'electric-gate territories' full of better-off people.

There really isn't a common ancestry in terms of architecture unless you consider Roman invasion Empire - religious builds all over the world, given the Roman treatment - not before or since them have historical builds been uniform.

I found this video clip interesting.

We tend to see the desire for an Islamic caliphate state as a modern thing, but really there was only a 100 year pause in the desire for such a state.

It's no wonder there have been centuries of conflict between Europe and the Middle East.

It would be simplistic to expect conflict to have simply gone away.

The EU is too big to take into account local needs, wants and feelings.
Protesters in a south-western French town have built a wall around the entrance to a former hotel to prevent it being used as a migrant shelter. Dozens of residents of S!m!ac erected a barrier 18m (59ft) long and 1.8m high around the Formule 1 hotel. They said the local authorities had failed to discuss with town residents the plan to house up to 85 migrants in the building.

The authorities have not yet responded to the construction of the wall.

  • I think one of the main problems with the eu is the fact that they cannot see that there is a problem!

As for the idea of democracy, it is not one they are fond of. Jean-Claude Juncker has actually begged other eu countries not to hold in/out referendums because the people might actually vote to leave.

A lot of people seemed to think that the UK leaving the eu might trigger a third world war. As with many other things, that seems to be up to Germany.

And that is one thing I see as a big problem, Germany seem to have way too much influence over the eu. It seems as if they couldn't get what they wanted by waging war so they decided to try and sneak in through the back door.

The simple fact is the eu want a superstate where EVERYTHING is run by Brussels. That is not what the UK wants. We have always wanted to be independent, find our own way in the world, THAT is what we voted for.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare
