Interesting. My sister's partner lived next to a rented house which eventually got sold. A year or so later someone turned up at his door and said he was the real owner. He comes from North Africa and had bought the house on a mortgage and rented the house out to friends, also from North Africa, while he went back there for a year or so. He had arranged with the friends to pay all the bills direct including the mortgage. They did not, and when the arrears got large enough that balliffs were knocking, they scarpered. The building society then repossessed it and sold it because they were unable to contact him. Of course he did it all wrong, but that was partly because he wanted an unofficial let and trusted his friends. Anyway the upshot was he lost the house and did not know until he came home to find it sold.

Are you saying the blame's not with him? Can't say any of that surprises me... 'unofficial' actually translates as 'illegal'. Unfortunate for him, but totally avoidable and the lender seems completely within their rights to me... :/ If someone's planning something as dodgy, you'd at least think they'd pay the bills/mortgage on direct debit and charge a fixed rent! Sorry if appearing harsh, I just wondered if you thought the lender was in the wrong. Wasn't too sure if you were siding with him.

Are the boxes even an issue anymore? It seems to be other people talking about them rather than the OP. Viewed in the context of someone forging your signature and selling your house it really is just a sideshow. For now though it's probably one of the only ways for the guy to direct some of his anger. It's something tangible and immediate. When the legal stuff gets going with his ex he'll soon forget about the boxes.

I think it's understandable that you're reluctant to be upfront about the boxes. This guy scared you! I wouldn't be eager to tell an angry man that I'd given his stuff away regardless of the rights or wrongs. Personally, I wouldn't be having any direct contact with him.

no I wasn't siding with original owner of the neighbouring house I described, just pointing out that going abroad and leaving your house in the care of someone else and no forwarding address, is asking for trouble.
  • We were FTB, and not one person mentioned (or advised) us to change the locks. Yes, a silly oversight - but we were relieved and excited to have completed our first purchase after so much aggro. None of our friends have changed the locks on their properties either so it's clearly not that unusual.
We've never changed locks, nor do I know of anyone who has !

Nothing. You offered them to the vendor. They didn't collect them. If he has a problem with what happened, he can take it up with her.

Spot on. You really haven't done anything wrong. The stuff that's gone has gone because of his wife's actions.

How are you communicating with this man? Is it through solicitors or direct?

Yeah I had a funny feeling they'd 'sell' in that order... unfortunately probably the worst order. But not your fault.

Not your problem. The ex's problem. You've done more than you needed to do, and well done for doing so.

Let her sort it out, she made it all happen.
