Around 8 years ago I worked with a girl, who at the age of 32 was diagnosed with some form of skin cancer. Treatment would have left her infertile or with significantly reduced fertility. She was single at the time having split with her long term partner 2 years earlier.

As treatment would have left her infertile, she was offered to have frozen embryos.

She enquired about freezing eggs but was told that the success rate of frozen eggs then conceiving with them was extremely low so this was not offered.

Her best chance was to freeze embryos using a sperm donor (even then I think she was told about 1 in 5 would be successful). She was able to see some profiles and select the sperm donor and froze some embryos.

I’ve not seen her since but am in touch with another former colleague who had heard from her. She’s in a new relationship and apparently her partner isn’t too keen on a child not being biologically his. Apart from that I’ve not heard what’s happened to her since.

  • Here's a blog that talks about the egg-freezing experience, hope you find it helpful:

Thank you for regurgitating what I have already researched on the internet. I am well aware of the costs and success rates. I'm sorry if I seem rude but this post seems condescending.

    You certainly are rude!

For one, maybe you could have mentioned that you'd already done your research, then maybe I wouldn't have bothered to waste my time to be told that I was just regurgitating what you already knew.

For two, others than you have posted here and THEY might not have done the same level of research.

For three, if you are so clever about research why didn't you find the forum that Cherry Gale has shared? But maybe you'll respond to her as rudely!

Finally, who says that what I wrote wasn't from experience? Maybe not as a woman who went through it, but someone with clinical experience whose knowledge goes beyond what you find on the intranet?

It's a hell of a process to go through though, and you have to think whether it's really worth it.
Especially considering they're bound to find a drunk guy in a bar who would do it without a condom with little persuasion; about as accurate as selecting a donor online
    Mortgage (Nov 15): £79,950 | Mortgage (May 19): £71,754 | Mortgage (Sep 22): £0

  • This is also something that worries me; I have recently split from my husband of 2 years and I'm now worried that I won't get another chance but then again, that's not a good reason to stay with someone. I always made it quite clear that I didn't want children but I realise now that it was because I didn't want children with him; it was already like I was looking after a big kid really. Now I feel I really do want children but at 29, I'm not getting any younger and it's something that worries me so much, probably unnecessarily but you can't help how you feel. I am seeing someone else who has a 9 year old and that is also hard to face sometimes as it feels like he's been there and done that so wouldn't necessarily want to do it all again.

I wish you the very best of luck.

In the same way you want to chastise me for not saying I had researched, you did not state that you had any experience. So from where I am, you clearly Googled and the two others could do the same.

I also asked for experiences not numbers and percentages. Independent of websites relating to egg freezing. Whether I had done my own research was irrelevant and I shouldn't have to go into specific detail in order to have a simple question answered just to please you.

I didn't egg freeze (wish I had!) but have been through several cycles of IVF. Care Fertility would be worth looking at for treatment as they are the largest private provider in the country. They have pretty regular open days which might help you get a feel for the clinic/ask questions without having to pay a consultation fee. One question I would ask is how many eggs they think you would need to have a reasonable chance of a successful pregnancy. It is likely that you would need several cycles of treatment to have even a good chance as success with fresh and frozen embryos often take multiple cycles. Your individual response to the drugs and egg reserve will also be a huge factor in how many cycles you would need.

I hope it works out well for you.

I've been told that the egg harvesting process is pretty grim and the drugs you have to take make you feel bloody awful. I also know that the success rates are better if the eggs are already fertilised when they are frozen.

It depends on the clinic and the individual. I had sedation for the egg retrieval so felt nothing other than period type cramping for a day or so afterwards. The only real problem I had with the drugs was the astronomical price! One of the drugs does have a tendency to give headaches/migraines but this can generally be avoided by giving up caffeine. I was on the highest level of drugs that they will prescribe, and on them for nearly twice as long as most women need, and the most I felt was a little fuzzy at times and more emotional than usual, though this was probably heightened by how much was riding on it.
