On hearing some frustrated posts on DS' and DD' university stuff i wanted to share some progress we've had in the pickle house.

My DS moved out 4 years ago and has not returned. However the bedroom at parental home is like a time warp with things remaining as if he never left. Despite the offer of help, bin bags, charity shop runs it seems when he is home thats the last thing he wants. So we now declutter by wotsappp and i sent pictures and get a' nay or yay' in response. Pleased to say 6 bin bags filled and despatched to CS. It seems when you are away the sentimentality is not so acute and ive had very few requestsfor 'keeps'
  • I have been sleeping in the other bedroom as I have a health condition and so have been sleeping apart from my husband for a month or two. It's starting to annoy me that I have my shoes and boots in our old bedroom and a lot of his computer equipment in my new bedroom!

I'm going to try and rearrange some things today while I have the energy.

I'm sure there are some things that can be binned or recycled. I have a bag of tattered baby blankets that I used when one of my cats when she was ill. They could leave the house.

I'm positive that I will find some items to be kondoed in my husband's stuff.:p

I can't remember if I said this on here, but I couldn't find my birth certificate and it was in one of his boxes! I have no idea why.

  • Well folks, I didn't get into the loft. However, I did get into the sideboard and the kitchen cupboards.

From memory... things that have left:
    • Several broken Christmas decorations
    • Coins - to go into mil's purse
    • Assorted random bits of plastic from flat pack furniture
    • Approx 10 Ventolin inhalers (exp 2010-2014)
    • Mummified elastic bands
    • Unknown screws and fuses
    • Flower seeds that look ancient (have taken these in hopes of success)
    • Assorted paperwork for hospital appointments that have been and gone
    • Receipts: 2009-2016 (mostly Asda and Dunhelm)
    • Leaking batteries
    • Some sort of ribbon and bead necklace where the ribbon had frayed beyond repair
    • Coasters that had a pattern of mosaic tiles affixed. Many tiles missing and not to be found for repair.
    • Tins of soup bbe 2012-2014
    • Tins of fruit bbe 2016 (I took these!)
    • Tin of meatballs bbe 2014
    • Jars of curry sauce bbe 05 2017 (I took these)
    • Manky old ice cream tub with no lid
    • Pair old slippers
    • Jug that disgorged its contents via the edges of the lid as opposed to the more conventional method of via the spout
    • Several mouldy loaves of bread and crumpets
    • Mouldy fresh fruit from fridge
Also, after doing the laundry, my dear father in law was most shocked to find his clothes KM folded and left on his bed... "where the DUCK did you learn to fold laundry?! It's in perfect squares!" :rotfl:

M-I-l's operation a success and she's doing well. Albeit slightly shocked as to what happened to her house :D

Arg we are going through the same here, only he moved out almost 2 years ago. We cleared the bedroom, but then down came half of the attic contents and filled the bedroom, it's an ongoing nightmare!! :(

I've just spent 5 days at the house my mum lived in before she died - I'm the only one of the 3 of us dealing with paperwork, and it's a real eye opener - she seemed so organised, labelled files etc etc. But its an illusion :rotfl: I've dealt with genealogy, utility bills, inheritance info and medical papers in the last week, and there was a *lot* of misfiling - which happens to all of us, to be fair. A central heating maintenance bill was in with the medical stuff was the most recent. It used to drive my sister and I crazy that she never stored sweet food separately from savoury food. And some food might very easily be in a utensils cupboard. Always been like that, so just had to learn afresh every time  Result on the paperwork declutter though - a stack of A4 papers a foot high has been recycled immediately or put on the "confidential waste to burn" pile.

Back at home, I'm realising I have to tidy and do even *more* decluttering for the builders coming in later on, 3 rooms affected. I just sorted my Christmas decorations :rotfl: I shan't be having another tree, and some little strings of glittery stuff have never been opened, though I've had them 4 years or so - quite a bit has gone :j

A few more clothes have been worn out too :j and I'm looking at starting the fabric/old clothes stash: there's a cotton-lace tablecloth I bought from a roadside stand in Zimbabwe 20 years ago, all family members were seduced into buying them when they visited, and I'm no exception. I've never used it, ever :o and while I like the look of it, I have no affection for it, none at all. I've scanned various patterns of it, as I have ideas (one day) for layering images together, but thats it, its going. No idea what other textiles have had their day, but I'll soon find out.

I have just had kondoed a root canal. Now got a fat lip and look like I've had a stroke.

Managed to kondo some pears we picked at the weekend dumping them outside the front of the house in a box suitably labelled for people to help themselves. Loads more to go though. Will pick more this weekend and have another go.

2 more bags to CS and a large item that has been in shed for too long and is related to my work.....now gone on fr**cycle. Ventured into the "things to sell shed" yesterday and found lots of stuff just to get rid of or that really shouldn't be there - unopened tub of chocs from Christmas good till November - given to DD2 who is moving inot student house on Friday.

DD2 and I took a car load of stuff this morning to said house - 20 min drive away! I have been saying to her all week I thought she was taking too much and maybe some of the things she could get rid of PERMANENTLY now..........today she said 'maybe I have brought too much with me' Hey what do I know!!? ;) I know she wants to make her room familiar and homely but as I said she can always pop back to get things or I can drop in when passing and this is a new chapter so she will find new things she wants to surround herself with.........I think I got a sigh of agreement :)

Did worry me when she said 'so talk me through this washing machine Mum'....... I thought I had dragged her up proper!!!

Sorry to hear about your Dad Charly, sending hugs. You're very welcome to send me a PM if you ever need to talk.

Thank you all for your wishes for my Dad, Kittie especially bought me to tears for lighting a candle for us, so lovely of you!

Dad's cancer has spread to his brain, and he has refused any further treatment, as he has had radiotherapy and chemotherapy before, but the tumours continued to grow. The only treatment option left was whole brain radiation, and the side effects sounded awful, with no real benefits. We all fully support his decision and are spending as much time as we can with him.

Thanks so much Callisto and all for your very best wishes and hugs to all who are experiencing loss and pain at the moment ((((❤️))))

We returned home on Sunday having cut short stay with friends to spend time with Dad. He's just had pneumonia and spent five days in hospital for that. I think he and mum believe he's going to beat this and it breaks my heart. Apologies if I told you all this.

We were back, unpacked and revelling in being at home within the hour. Thanks to KM.We are leaving the cases in the spare room at the moment ready to fly up m6 if needed. Don't know whether that's good psychology or not.
