Did a launderette run ... and while that was going on I popped to Sainsbobs for beans. Still £1/4, I got 2 packs as I didn't have a bag with me to carry more and 8 cans is enough until next time I'm in there :)

Got no bread, so can't have toast. I've crumpets overload in the freezer - they've been lurking for a few weeks, so it seems best if I just defrost some of those and eat some crumpets ..... so that sorts that one out. Two crumpets for breakfast!

I deliberately haven't bought bread as it's so easy to get "bread variations overload" and I've already got some big bread rolls and the baguette.... and some frozen muffins. So I figured I'd wait a few more days until I was desperate to buy/eat bread.

I don't buy things again just because I've run out - I do like to try to have a break. Still got no spuds either, they're on offer at 4ldi this week, packs of four bakers for 49p.... so there's time to mull and think about spuds and have a break from them.

I've just turned the heating on - to run it for one hour. Just to see if it still works .... or goes bang. It's not been turned on since about March. I always intend to give it an hour's run mid-summer just to keep the pump working ... but then I never get round to it as it seems a waste.
  • Morning All,

Yeah its a bit chilly here too, met office suggests its 8deg with a high of 11 between 1pm & 3pm - ooh goody.

Think I have the start of a sore throat so I'll nip out in a bit and get my preferred winter remedies of soluble aspirin for gargling, some Echinacea, some vitamin c tablets and a bottle of green ginger wine :D - I love and crave it when I have a cold or a sore throat.

Yesterday was one of those nuisance kind of days when I had to be out between 11.15 and 14.30, so all I had was a egg and tomato sandwich mid morning, then a Broccoli Souffl! with a tomato and onion salad. Mid evening snack of stewed apples and the last of the yoghurt.

Caronc - I personally would go for the blue door, but what do your neighbours have?

Wort - I can relate to your problems with "trick or treaters" we had quite a number a few years back and there are a couple of new kids on the street so will wait and see what happens this year.

then a Broccoli Souffl! with a tomato and onion salad.

Would you mind sharing the recipe for that please N2bt.

Especially if it's a CFO sized recipe.

    TIA.

Need2bthrifty - neighbours on one side have blue, on the other white. I'm getting the under eave boards done to. I'm concerned that if the blues are slightly different shades it might look a bit off. Unfortunately the blue was painted by previous householders so my neighbours don't know what the exact colour is. If I go for red I'm thinking more a deep cherry or chestnut so nothing too bright, I don't want to be the talk of the town:rotfl:I'm still noodling at colours and charcoal or slate grey might work. I'm trying to stick with something fairly traditional as it an old house (1927) and it's original front door:)
  • Personally - I'd go for the red in your position (I'd say the cherry out of the two you mention). Not blue - because that's what the neighbours have got. Not grey in an area where the weather a lot of the year is likely to be "grey".

Of myself - I might have picked grey for a few things all else being equal. But - here in West Wales I've deliberately been picking warmer colours - because of all the grey weather and grey chapels and I'd imagine the weather is much the same (or worse) where you are.

In that case I would go for the cherry red - but then again which country has flag colours in the order of blue, red and white  mmmm

Maybe the slate grey would complement the sandstone better, decisions, decisions, I'm no help at all :D

    Hi Karcher

I adapted it from a courgette souffl! recipe I found basically just to use up some two-tone broccoli (yellow underneath and green on top). The recipe uses 1 large egg separated plus an extra egg white, but I didn't use the extra egg white and it turned out fine maybe not so high.

Place a small roasting with an inch of water in the oven - heat to 200deg.

6oz broccoli - cooked and mashed with a potato masher.
    Basic b!chamel sauce -
Melt 40g butter, add a heaped dessertspoon flour add 2floz milk bit by bit when you have a smooth mixture take off the heat, add the mashed broccoli and stir in an egg yolk, 10g of grated cheese (I used cheddar), a grating of nutmeg, pinch of cayenne, salt & pepper to taste.

Whisk the egg white/s and gently fold into the broccoli mixture. Pile into a well buttered 5 inch souffl! dish (I used the smallest sized Pyrex casserole dish) sprinkle over about a dessertspoon of parmesan. Place the dish in the roasting tin containing the hot water and bake for 30-35 mins.

I found it to be a good sized portion but you could add extras crusty/garlic bread, another veg on the side.

Bother hadn't thought of either of those! I hope my son might have some ideas. Dark green could be a thought but again don't want any football associations with the neighbours being painted blue.

I think it'll become "The week of the never ending Yorkies". Having procured a "That'll do" dish yesterday and all the ingredients.... why not?

But, I've nothing to go with it that I can think of at the moment. Could fill it with chips/curry sauce ... but realistically ... I've "nothing suitable".

I could fill it with kebab meatballs ... with/without cheese, but that's "not suitable" and I'd prefer to use those meatballs either as a kebab in the hole recipe or with the bog standard rice/sauce.

Yorkie's mixed and in the fridge.... awaiting that magical moment when one thinks "I can be bothered about now".

Cost to make, about 15p. Cost of oven to cook, about 4p.

    EDIT:

Well, that went down all right.

As it was nearly cooked, I suddenly thought "why not toss some peas, instant mash and stuffing in that ...with gravy". So I had that. I will admit to "getting a bit bored" of standing and waiting for it to cook, so brought it out while it was still a light caramel colour, rather than waiting for the colour to deepen.

It fitted fairly OK in my bowl, so I stuck it in a bowl to eat it. The bowl's easier to wash up than the plate as the plate's heavier, large/oval and awkward...

    Belly full now :)

    EDIT 2:

It won't win awards, but it was tasty.

You can never have too many crumpets, crumpets are good:). I had the last three this morning, so need to go and get some more tomorrow.
