Cooking for one (Mark Two)

Ended up having a big blow out
Not entirely by design.
Popped to L1dl and for some reason picked up their chilli/rice.
Freezer was empty of chips, which was annoying as that was on my list.
Back home I ate the chilli, but then got a hankering for a "cold dessert" ... and, eventually, I had a brain wave
I had the last of a pint of milk dated 20 October, so it needed using up. Pawing through the cupboard I found a chocolate angel delight (it was too dark/difficult to search for other flavours) .... so that was settled.
I used a click/lock "soup mug" - shook the half full bottle of milk so it was fluffy and poured that into the mug.... emptied the chocolate mix into it and forked it around to blend it in, then affixed the click/lock lid and gave it a thorough shaking - then put it in the fridge.
I tried to fool myself that I could dip into it and pop the lid back on ... it might last a day or so. In the event, it went in one sitting, with the aid of a big spoon0 -

I don't know why I fancied all the junk, but I just did.

I've got two of these that I picked up in Home Bargains, so you can find them in "cheap shops" for "about £1 or so".

It was just the right size - and ideal for mixing up this sort of stuff that needs a good shaking as the lid's secure (I still shake it over the sink "just in case").
I use them often for storing/reheating slow cooker stews/chilli type meals, or nuking tins of chunky soups .... freezer/microwave safe they're intended to be "to take soup to work and reheat in a microwave"
Angel Delight packet says to use 300ml of milk - I just knew I had "about half a pint" so figured I'd use it all anyway as that was "about right" - so it made sense to give the milk a good shaking while still inside its bottle. No point muckying up a measuring jug just to find out how much milk I had - and/or measure out 300ml and have a small bit left over. I just winged it.0 -
Woke up/been up since 4am. Currently on my 3rd coffee ... not eaten anything as it's too dark to see in the kitchen and I dislike any cooking when it's dark outside as the kitchen's so dark/gloomy and I can't see inside the cupboards, nor read any packet instructions anyway.
Earlier, when I made my angel delight, it was dark - and to read the packet instructions I used my cameraphone and I could just make out the instructions... if not I'd have taken a photo and transferred it to the PC to zoom in on it.
It's rubbish having a dark kitchen with inadequate lighting and dark brown cabinets.0 -
If a light bulb needs changing and it feels like too much of a faff to do so right now - I've been known to just lug a couple of lights on a stand I have into the room concerned and just plug into a powerpoint and use for extra lighting. So - if you've got one of them then maybe.....
Must admit lighting was one of my priorities when I re-did my kitchen recently. When I bought the house it just had one of those old-fashioned fluorescent tubes in the ceiling and that was it. So I'd got as far as ripping that tube off and replacing it with one of those "several spotlights on metal pole" set-ups. Still got that - but have now got under-cupboard lighting under all the wall cupboards and my new cookerhood has a light in it. Duh - admission time - I've yet to use the cookerhood light and don't often use the under-cupboard lights. But I like the option of just switching on said under-cupboard lights sometimes - rather than the "main light" - as it feels cosier. One needs a bit of "cosy" in wild/wet/windy West Wales sometimes....0 -

They still make Angel delight:eek::j:j
Which bit of MrT do they hide in?!
As a child I used to make a pudding of chocolate Angel Delight with mandarin (tinned of course!) slices and trifle sponges in it.
All put in delicate little bowls - anything else would have had my mother in a fit!!
If I find some today I'm going to celebrate adulthood by going down your route PN with the biggest spoon I can find:D
And the mandarin would count as one of my five a day too, wouldn't it?!0 -
ooh angel delight! I always knew when I was pregnant because of my angel delight craving, that and large navel oranges. I used to make a pint and eat the whole lot in one go. I used to love the light brown one that tasted of caramel
Lost a bit more weight, so very steady progress, down to eating omnivore but not much meat. Spelt, dried raspberries and milk for breakfast at 6, plus a kiwi. Second beakfast just now, a fresh fig and two small slices of hm spelt toast topped with soft goats cheese and a couple of slices of tasty ripe tomato
I have a packet of dal spices out and will make dal, mostly for ready meals. Nice and comforting with rice. One meal today will be fish, pan fried in butter with a medley (sounds good but it`s all in one pan) of chopped celery and fennel. Lettuce picking out of the garden and LO tomato
I made cinnamon buns last night, I always crave a cake or something but one a day does me fine. Very nice appearance and smell, large and fluffy after rising, while I fixed the u bend under the sink. Made dough in the bm, easy
money, my sister changed fluorescent lights for identical led tubes, she says that the light is fab
I got stuck on led light strips over my kitchen surfaces. An easy job but the electrician had to do it. Good lighting0 -

Angel Delight now comes in TUBS, not slim packets.... making it cheaper/100g.
There are also the supermarket own brands.
These days they also sell it ready made in individual small pots (what a waste of money).
I go for butterscotch first, then strawberry, chocolate is what I must have bought when I picked up a handful and decided to add 1 chocolate one for good measure
It will be where the tinned fruit, custard, similar are to be found - on the top shelf or one under that. That's where all the dessert stuff is.....
The one I had last night was an own brand version to be honest, but it's all the same stuff.
Growing up I used to like the little pockets of powder that were in bubbles that floated to the top where the mix hadn't been mixed thoroughly.
Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda sell it at 50p/sachet; Sainsburys has the strawberry tubs at £1.40.
Asda have a "no added sugar" range
Own brands are typically 27p/sachet.0
