So - re-heating rice in sieve over water aka steaming it.

Now that might be a possibility - rather than direct in saucepan.

How long do you do it for?
It depends on how much rice there is but usually about 10 mins over a simmering pan does it. I pop a lid over the sieve. I like it that way as it seems to not go mushy and you know it's reheated evenly:)
I've got into the habit of "serving up" my leftovers as I'm spooning my portion of food onto my plate, as it lessens the chances of "forgetting" things and leaving them out too long. As my fridge is pretty empty 99% of the time it's not an issue for me to put warm/hot foods in there as there's nothing in there to worry about if the fridge temperature is raised by doing that.
I try to do that but as a prompt if stuff is too warm to put in the fridge I leave it next to the kettle. I always have a cuppa before bed so it doesn't get forgotten. :)
A number of years ago I had folk round for a bit of a "do", I had made a buffet with a few hot elements including various pastry bites. I served some and popped them on a tray which I put in the grill above the oven to keep warm. Needless to say I forgot about them. I don't use the grill that much. Later that week I was complaining that there was a smell in the kitchen, the bin was scrubbed, drains disenfected and underneath the fridge etc. checked but nope nothing and the smell persisted. After a few days it went and I didn't think much of it. A few weeks later I opened the grill and lo and behold there were the pastries and what must have been the source of the smell:eek:

My house is a candle free zone. If my leccy went off I've got solar lights permanently charging and/or available to charge up if I were to ever anticipate an issue. They're great, cheap/everywhere; I've got three good/bright ones ... I've also got a "wind up torch" that I keep beside the fuse box.... never needed to use it, but that's where I'd need it "if ever".
I've a wee light on my phone and also a fairly powerful torch. I like candles anyway so always have loads in the house :)

I always fry rice when reheating unless I'm nuking it. But I guess that might not be to everyones taste. I just like to know it has got really hot:D

There's been a strange "yellow light" everywhere for about the last hour - must be some effect of distant storm clouds. It's like an amber glow, almost sulphurous ... most unusual/bizarre.

No wind here - I can see neighbours' trees in the distance moving a tiny bit, but not even what I'd call "breezy"; it's practically still here, compared to the coastal norm.

Strange light here too - it's barely got light here today. You would think it was evening not the middle of the day:eek:

Freezer challenge part one is completed and it is now in the order I want it in. I do need to process heaps of tomatoes though so the system may very quickly go skewhiff:o. At I know my inventory for that freezer is completely up to date:).

Breakfast this morning was crumpets with cheese spread and an apple, lunch will be lentil soup and the wings from the roast chook. Tonight I'm going to have the other leg with bubble & squeak, gravy and broad beans. I picked the final beans on Friday and want to use them up rather than freeze them as there are only a couple of portions.:)
  • Right - time for lunch and I've just seen Caron's hint of 10 minutes steaming the rice. So a portion of that to try that way - with some leftover "sorta stew" from yesterday.

I'm in the nw England, and the sky's the same here a yellow dull glow no rain, and it looks like the wind has just picked up a little. I took my garden chairs into the garage, but can't get the table in, so I've pushed it in the corner.

Caronc I will look into the vacuum packs , though I do prefer to use less plastic ,which is why I was using the cartons as they can be washed and reused.

Just about to make a ham salad sandwich for lunch, and I'm thinking of jacket potato with beans and bacon for tea, I cooked some bacon yesterday whilst I was cooking dinner. I have some cake left from the buffet I went to Saturday night.

Lunch is a jacket spud, with beans/cheese. After this one there are just 3 baking spuds left to get through .... got them as a YS, £1 instead of £2, so it'd have been daft not to buy them as it was 2.5Kg so only 40p/Kg.

I've still got the yellow glow - and from the window I can see very dark grey clouds... it's not wet here (yet).

    Afternoon everyone

I hope that those of you in the path of the storm are ok and that you don't suffer any damage.

The lucky dip from the freezer today is mince of some kind, either beef or lamb, so it looks like either a shepherd's or cottage pie base. I'll do some mash to put on the top and have that with some steamed veg.

I had Greek yoghurt for breakfast again with some berries. I think that I have enough berries for breakfasts for at least 6 months so I think I have been over buying for one person.

Lunch will be a couple of crumpets with some cheese when I get around to it.

Same here, and apparently the orange glow is caused by dust from the Sahara, clouds are whizzing along now and the trees are starting to move more, doubt there will be many leaves on them tomorrow morning.

Last time there was Saharan sand here every where outside was a dusty yellow the following day

I'm not in storm path, South Coast, guess it will be just strong winds. I'm indoors for the day now anyway

    Jammy crumpets for breakfast

Cheese salady sarnie for lunch, with some of my stewed apples + yoghurt & honey

Dinner is small steak & ale pie, probably with HM Actifry chips
