money, there are exterior paints that shrug off dirt and they look good for quite a long time, I have a lime render system on 2/3 of my house and cedar on the rest. The painted lime render still looks fine 4 years on but it is the algae streaks which will get to me first. I did go round with a garden sprayer last year, wearing a mask and that was effective. Only had to do here and there on the shaded side. There wasn`t much algae tbh but I like nipping things in the bud. The whole house inside and out is eco and I only use auro paints inside, all white, all over but it looks like off white and is nice, everyone can breathe when they come here, even people with asthma

PN me too re too much pasta, I have loads of bags, all spelt pasta. I have been on the point of giving yet more to dds but am thinking, not before winter. Its cool and dark and sealed, its not going to go off

I`ve got to settle to steadier meals tomorrow, no bits added on. Its going to be boring but nice enough. I hope we get some rain, this warmth is horrible, the rain would help clean the air

Errrmm...thanks for the thought Kittie - but dont think I'd fancy wearing a mask. The thing about anything being sprayed around on the outside of my house and it's extremely close to some of my organic food I'm growing.

I've just resigned myself to it being one of the two things I've dug my heels in about here. So, if a suitable paint gets invented at some point that can go straight onto the outside of the house that'll "hide a multitude of sins" and not cause the slightest risk whatsoever in the course of doing it to either me or my garden = okay I'd use it. Otherwise - that's that and the house never gets painted again #shrugs#

I guess it may be possible to put some attractive good-quality wood cladding totally covering the outside of the house at some point?? If it is and I have the money to do it ever - then I'd consider that.

It must be nice to be able to have a plot of land as "blank canvas" in location of one's choice and start from scratch....

Another one here with too many rice & pasta options in the cupboard, I'm not going to embarass myself by listing them especially as my go to is either bog standard spaghetti or brown basmati. As for my pulse/lentil collection........:o

Moving away from over-stocking I'd recommend tandoori spiced lamb breast. A marinade of tandoori spice, lemon juice and yoghurt and then roasted. It was really lovely and I trimmed the fat beforehand so not too greasy. :)
  • Let's hope this is start of a trend in this country. It would certainly be my supermarket if I lived there.

Would be ideal for us singles as well (At. Fed-Up. At. Having. To. Buy. Large Packets).

Thinks....coo-ee.....any chances for one in West Wales (aka the place where aging hippies come to die)?

It'll be very expensive when compared to packets with packaging. It's labour intensive as you have to wait for the little man to weigh it out for you for a lot of the stuff.

They're also not open many hours/day, limiting the number of people who could get there even if they wanted to.

Quick googling - 10am opening and they shut on Saturday at 5pm (instead of 5.30pm).

Totnes is "slow" enough that anyone wanting to shop before or after work could shop Saturday instead. It's a town I know pretty well personally - but "story of my life - I couldnt afford to live there":( So I think their opening hours would work in that context.

I'd find that easier to manage than some of the places round here - which are rather prone to opening when they want to open - rather than when the customer expects them to be open. So still getting caught out sometimes by finding somewhere isnt open at all at any time on a shop opening day....

Re the "labour intensive" and remembering Kittie's comments about little shops - and I know she'd just love that one all round. In fact - she'd like Totnes full stop.

    Good morning everyone,
MTSTM - reminds me of the old "weigh & save" stores, there was a great one in York when I lived there in the early 1980s, really busy so the stuff turned around fast enough not to go stale. It was self-serve though so I was always a little wary of things that you wouldn't cook like cereal.

My house is sandstone so has really thick walls that's great at holding out the cold but can feel a bit damp in prolonged wet weather. Very little upkeep needed on the outside which suits me just fine.

The sun is shining :D though it's not terribly warm.

My bumped bits from yesterday have stiffened up so I need to try and move a good bit today so I don't seize up!

I didn't manage to finish my dinner last night so it was LO curry for breakfast :o

Lunch I think will be ham with some of the beetroot I roasted on Monday, pickled turnip and some cucumber. I reckon I'll get a few more cucumbers before the season ends, I just love them as they actually taste of something unlike the bought ones. Tonight it is a use up of LO chicken from Monday and LO rice from last night which I'll either stir fry or stew with veg.:) There seems to be a bit of a LO theme this week....

    Morning all,

Another one here with far too much pasta taking up room in the cupboards. I've got spaghetti, fusilli, lasagne sheets (may make a lasagne next week now), linguini, macaroni and penne. Some of it is whole wheat. I've only got Basmati and Arborio rice, they are nearly empty.

As it's a cold wet day here I had porridge for breakfast with some raspberries. I got fresh raspberries yesterday to make a cake today and that only needs 150g so that was a good way of using up the extra 50g.

Lunch is yet another tuna mayo sandwich.

I've made a cottage pie for dinner tonight for a nice change, so I'm looking forwad to that. Normal CFO problem though, extra portions for the freezer. It never seems worth making just enough for one meal.

I remember those "weigh and save" stores. I never used to buy that much from them for two reasons:
    - not much of the sort of food I eat in them
    - I did find their style of containers felt somewhat unhygienic to me.

But the more recent style of dispensing containers in shops (including this one) to allow one to buy quantity required are a very different style and couldnt be "got at" with someone else's grubby fingers or the like. So I'd be much more inclined to use them. I certainly remember the lids one could readily open and the scoops to hoick the contents out in those old-style shops - and they were a bad idea.

Maybe with this new style of container/growing awareness of things/the huge number of single person households/the huge increase in expectations people have of being able to get what they personally want (as opposed to falling in with "family tastes") means their day has now come.

I'm another one who liked the idea of the Scoop/Weigh shops, but not the unhygienic aspects to it. I am the same with uncovered loaves and pastries in bakery areas of shops. Indeed, when my local L1dl opened up its bakery I walked in the main door with my eyes focussed on chocolate bars .... and opposite that were the new bakery items and there were two teen boys there and one was rubbing one on his spotty face and tossing it back!!

Coughs, sneezes, dropped on the floor, pawed, grabbed, groped and tossed back. No thanks.

Always intrigued when people say stuff like that, I peeked: if I sold this house could I buy there or is it truly horrific.

An initial search shows the cheapest three houses to cost: £180k, £188k, £200k.

A house "as similar to mine as they can show me" is priced at £217k.

If I HAD to live there, without knowing individual properties/roads/issues, I'd certainly feel able to view a few of them without feeling "hard done by".

I guess, if I had to buy one TODAY ... it'd be this one, which is a "major step up from what I've got" but the same value.

Although their taste is shocking ....
