In Post 8, Le_Kirk says - With Excel open, click on File and open Options .................

And you're saying 'find the file in Windows Explorer.

Am I opening Excel or Internet Explorer 11?

Ah, OK ... he was saying something slightly different.

Follow my instructions - you're opening neither of those; you're opening Windows Explorer. You want to set Excel as the default program/application for .xlsx files.

    Just an update.

Think the problem is now fixed :D

I tried adjusting settings kindly outlined by everyone. Thank you!
    Unfortunately nothing seemed to work.

Using the link provided by Doam, I have gradually been trying different solutions provided by people, steering clear of attempting registry fixes. I would rather hang-glide over Niagara Falls!

It was suggested to try a repair of my Office programme, which I did. But nothing seemed to happen!

I deleted the files from my desktop, and reinstalled from USB stick, opening again in Office Excel. The files showed as they had before, chose to save with a slightly different name. The option to save as an Excel file appeared, and I chose it.

The icon on the files now has an Excel x, rather than e (internet icon), and I can open from the files.

It's been a learning experience, and I would like to thank those who've helped patiently.

    Much appreciated.
