This is a picture of how file appears when opened.

The e (internet explorer) icon at left, is how the file is displayed on desktop.

The file is opening via Internet Explorer instead of directly to Excel. Excel then treats the file as an internet download, maybe.

Can you right-click on the file and select "Open With...", then choose Excel from the dialog box (you might have to click 'More apps' to find it), and also select the tick-box which says "Always use this app".

That should open the file directly into Excel - see if it makes a difference.

Hi lammy, thanks for your help.

Had already tried that, however Excel isn't given as an option. I chose programmes, Excel, but screen says file name not valid.

Try renaming to .xml, then try opening it from Excel (ie not double-clicking the file).

    Thanks for replying.

I can open the file in Excel, but not directly from saved backup.

Like you say, if I go to Excel, choose the file, the worksheet seems alright.

However, this works differently to two other Excel files which I saved at the same time. The other backup files have the file extension .xsl compared to the extension on problem files, which is .xlsx

It seems that somehow the .xlsx files have become corrupted, and I wondered whether I could somehow change them to .xsl files, which work fine.

    Thank you

You mean .xls not .xsl ... .xls is the "old" (97-2003) Excel file format.

My wife has the odd Excel file that won't open properly in Excel when double-clicking them, but opens fine if opened from within Excel.

I did as you suggested - opened Excel, clicked File, Open, but there are no Trust Centre or Trust Centre Settings, just general programmes and files on my PC.
Not File, Open. Click on File, then run down the list to the bottom and click on Options, then follow my previous instructions.

You're right, apologies. The files which work alright are -
Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet (.xls)

Have found Trusted Locations, which gives a list of paths or user locations. Unfortunately there is no option 'file block settings. or choice to restore defaults.

    :wall:

Please read again what Le_Kirk posted. Repeated below in my own words ...

Find the file in Windows Explorer
Right click on the file and select Open With from the context menu. (You might need to press and hold Shift [or is it Ctrl?] and then right click to see the Open With option)
Click on Choose default program (or whatever it says in Windows 10)
Find and select MS Excel in the list of compatible programs
Tick the box for Always use blah blah
    Click OK

The file should now open in Excel, and the icon for the file in Explorer should change from IE to Excel.
