I definitely didn't buy a £1000 laptop. Not half that price

So you need to pay it off plus 4 payments.......

Correct but the Infinity agreement as it used to be called also includes the careplan, anti-virus and the cloud software all of which factors into the cost of the lease agreement.

Your payments aren't just for the laptop they are for everything. Unfortunately as stated on here you will need to either return the laptop or pay the final 4 payments, there is a not a great deal you can do two years on.

    What ombudsman ??

The agreement re your contract and paying extra money to keep the laptop .
How much will you owe if you do not continue the contract ??
If you do not pay will the debt be passed to debt collectors and your credit record trashed for six years ??

Could be the consumer ombudsman? Currys are a member of that.

It's the Financial Ombudsman currys were referring to. Frankly I'd rather just pay it off ASAP and use the laptop till it conks out one day or sell it on. I'm more likely to use the phone to browse than the lenovo. It's so much quicker. Our home wifi is rubbish and the laptop always drops the signal. Cheers

I did see the Infinity article on the internet at some point. I don't believe the term Infinity was around when i took out the agreement last feb. I did also read that Infinity was for business people and have seen various article where private consumers have been sold this. Rentsmart/Currys have fiddled the paperwork to get a 'sale' and of course, poor consumer hasn't read the agreement and have been locked into 4 yrs worth of payments and then the goods have to be handed back or something like that.

    Your words
I made it clear on that day I wanted a credit agreement.

so the X Year term + 4 payments = total amount payable. How does this differ (for you) from a credit agreement?
So you pay X amount for the goods over X term.

    Sounds more like buyers remorse.

Infinity has since been renamed I believe so they wont be throwing it around.

@Custardy it's quite possible that the OP went in with the assumption of a credit deal and the staff member sold them the upgrade agreement under the ruse of a credit agreement, obviously OP should have read the agreement but I think its less buyers remorse more buyers haste.
  • Just received the 24 month letter from ThinkSmart reference my Upgrade Anytime laptop - Paying the 3 months extra payment to 'keep' the laptop. In the tiny print at the bottom of the website, Keep means for 10 years.

Now I seriously doubt that anyone is going to chase me for a 10 year old laptop that they reckon is only worth 80 quid now, but it could be something I need to be aware of.

I cannot find anywhere that if I don't want to upgrade that all I have to do is let the direct debit run for another 3 months, so I will be contacting CS tomorrow to make sure that's all there is.

Pretty bad deal all round really. Next time I will just go for normal credit and know that the laptop will be mine at the end of the credit period.

    Hi all,

Thank you Steven for adding to my moans and groans about PCW/Rentsmart Ltd.

Next week I will be paying my 24th DD payment and I thought that would be it. But alas no, the payment made in Currys/PCW is not part of the 24 lease payments so there will be a 25th payment in Feb and then a further 3 payments to Rentsmart

Even now I still maintain to Rentsmart and Currys that I was mis-sold. I also believe that the Pre-Hire Contract and Hire Contract do not have the correct information on as per the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

You must also be given key financial information including:

    the type of credit
the amount of credit or the credit limit
    the duration of the agreement
the rate of interest charges and the APR and any conditions applicable to the rate
    the total amount payable
the amounts and timings of repayments

This information must be contained in a document headed 'Pre-Contract Information' which must be provided separately to the credit agreement itself.

There is nothing on my pre-contract that clearly gives the total amount payable before interest is added nor after (if you wish to 'keep' the item). Nothing about APR rate. This information is supposed to be there so customer can make an informed decision before signing their life away So the customer can see the difference between paying by cash or debit card and paying by credit agreement.

A previous person mentioned a cooling off period. There isn't one on my contract but perhaps legally there should be. Under the CCA 1974, if you sign the contract away from the business premises, a cooling off period must be on the contract. I could argue I didn't sign it on Rentsmart Ltd premises but I don't think it would do any good.

We have the Misrepresentation act 1967 - If you walk into a shop called Currys/PC World and get served by a person wearing that shop's uniform, then surely most consumers would think that the sales person will be truthful and actually works for a company on their name badge.

I am half tempted to go into Currys/PCW and pretend to want to buy the expensive computer there and then once they've printed everything off, say I want to check it over and sit there and read all the pages and then tell them to stick it just to watch the sales persons face drop:j
