The expense of keeping it in condition can be terrible, and then there's the inheritance tax, both of these are why we find ourselves in this situation now. My sister is always short of money these days as she is unable to work in the only sector she knows anything about (equestrian) and must survive by selling off her belongings, goodness knows what she will do when they are gone.
Can't you both open up the estate to visitors, especially if you have an orangery? Convert a shed and sell ice creams, get a few animals for the "petting farm", put some family documents in a glass case, dust off some of the stuffed tiger rugs and you'll be raking it in!!0 -

Meantime the "big" house is now but a distant ancestral memory, only represented by the 18th century sofa in its current quarters in one of the flats which the dower house has been converted into. One of which is let to people initially thought to be the right sort who would appreciate such fine stuffed seating. However, they are now turning out to be mere dog fanciers (and probably breeders?).
Sadly therefore, despite entry attempts, sister can't repossess the sofa and add it to her ongoing sale of family heirlooms.
And in a further twist of fate, the estate never recovered from losing half its servants in the Great War so has had to seek assistance from "continentals". Despite giving said persons vast sums of money they have rather annoyingly not provided an address at which they can be found and are now , rather worryingly, not answering the phone to explain what they did with the remainder of the family fortune. The remaining ancient retainers (family solicitor and accountant) are now represented by their offspring who do not provide services in lieu (/"on tick") any more, so professional support is lacking and the family has had to turn to the interwebnet thingy to fill the gaps that their upbringing left about how the world actually works.0 -

I'm sure he has a Turkish friend of a friend who will sort all this out for him, for a mere 75% of the income.0
