  • Well, I am so relieved. Having felt like a complete numpty for managing to double insure my car (although also that they shouldn't have let me do it! and it's that long ago I have no idea why I did...) they have cancelled the policy back to 2022 and are refunding the premiums for just over 2k. Some of which will indeed go straight off the mortgage when it clears into my account.

In other news I found my niece's xmas present in Johnny Lulu's sale, bought it using TCB giftcards and immediately paid the 52p cashback off the mortgage. So that means I am now at 4.55 to reach my goal of £300 from bits and pieces OP, and still with the 5p womble in my purse, so really 4.50.

And the freegan October challenge goes on...

  • Watched a little bit of How to pay off your mortgage in 2 years on YouTube, which I remember watching at the time, when I didn't even have mortgage. I can't help but wonder if they could even make that kind of series now when the amounts people borrow are so much larger. I'd be interested to see what ideas work nowadays. Presumably only drug trafficking and working in the city...

  • Right, used 704.50 from my car insurance refund to take this month's OP up to a nice round £1k. My 5p road kill lives to OP another day. Hopefully there will be more by the end of the month when we count up the freegan challenge.
  • I really like your Freegan challenge
  • Yesterday was actually quite spendy but all required. Ordered child 2's school lunches (£50) which are not free because he's not in compulsory education yet. Ordered child 1's lunches for next half term too which are free. Then I also had to pay the cooking fee for child 2 (£20) and the deposit for child 1's residential trip (£20). All jolly good value etc I'd just rather the costs fell at the start of the month! Tbf, the cooking fee was due ages ago but for some reason only OH was linked up to child 2 on the payment system so I couldn't pay it.

Otherwise life remains busy. I am looking forward to getting home at 5 today and then not having anywhere else to be for the first time all week.
  • Payday!

We have managed to keep £200 from the food budget to OP, which makes for a total of £1200 this month which is fantastic and will in all likelihood never be matched again. There's still £70 left over in the joint account which we will keep as a float.

I have whisked off the £500 of my responsibility payment into my LISA, having decided to put it all in there this month and possibly until it is full. I still have about £300 above what is budgeted for to decide what to do with. I may put it to one side for Christmas spends as that does tend to start raising its ugly head.

Tomorrow we can check the mortgage balance and see where we're at after October interest but before November payment goes in (I have to say I find it quite dispiriting how you owe more as the month goes on!).

All of the remaining insurance refund has gone into PBs, as that's where it mostly came from. This is my securely knowing I can pay my SA tax fund, and also my 'fingers crossed' fund. So fingers crossed for Friday!

  • That's a great result, and so impressed with your freegan challenge.
  • Checked this morning and the balance was £227,516.71. So I immediately sent £16.72 over to bring it under thr 500 mark :)

This morning I've coloured off three £500 squares and had to explain to my husband again why mortgage payment plus OPs does not equal total reduction in mortgage.

Have also had an offer to do some guest sessions online for an overseas group that will pay £300 a pop. It's not super great money for the effort but it does mean they will all buy my book so... plus it's doing a favour for someone I know.

    Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)
Cleared 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️!!! In 5 years, 1 month and 29 days
Total amount repaid: £72,307.03. £1.10 repaid for every £1.00 borrowed

Finally earning interest instead of paying it!!!
