Actually ltm07 I would rather recieve post I don't care at what time just receive it. Which with people squabbling over hour changes and pensions and silly leaflets ain't happening! You are paid to walk and post - walk and post!

All work has changed in the past few years you need to move with it, you don't like it change work its something millions have to do.

Ltm you raise some good points. I do fail to see how royal mail could get any worse (maybe it's just my postie who can't read or something) Just after postie has been you can see the morning swap, neigbours running around passing the mis-delivered mail to each other. One day I was walking in town (a mile from home) and while crossing a railway bridge I found an unopened letter on the floor... addressed to me!

I remember the time (cue hovis music) when a first class stamp used to mean next day delivery. Now I think it means that the letter has a 75% chance of getting there at all, as opposed to 45% for second class :)

What happened to Consignia anyway?

well this is the thing, the servie is degrading.
one thing the union is failing badly on is raising the profile of what the strike is about.
i saw an interview with allen leighton just the other day saying posties were on an average £440/week. this is pure figure manipulation and i can only assume is via london loading and OT rates.
lets not get bogged down on one issue as the main issue is the whole package.
the pension farce is enough on its own.RM opted out of paying into the fund for years whilst posties were paying in.
now they havwe a pensions deficit which there answer ot is posties paying in more and working later.
the pay and D2D issue
start/finish time
factors such as the new flexibility buzzword. right now posties generally have a set duty so you get to know who lives where, how to do things in the best order etc.RM want ot do away with this altogether so people will be all over the shop nd its the customers who suffer on this.
the complaints i get from my own walk when im on holday or on the other duties im often moved onto are evidence of this.
theres more but needless to say i would be happy if the strikes stopped tomorrow and TBH think a work to rule would help with the publics perception though i dont think you realise the backlog that would be created by this as a lot of extra unpaid hours, using their own cars on duty etc goes on every day.
i work for RM but have only been in RM for a couple of years and will be leaving when my finances are stable allowing my to return to uni.
however i can see why the guys are striking though most would prefer a work to rule and i wish the union would ballot for this if RM are not interested in talking

That's a bit harsh. The leaflets etc aside, the pension seems to be the sticking point and no one should sit back and have that put under threat. Some people have been working for royal mail for many many years. To say if you don't like it leave is a bit black and white don't you think?

And yes, things do change, working practices change but that shouldn't mean we accept anything. Change is supposed to be for the better, not put up or sod off.

So yeah, I am irritated that I won't have any cash for a couple of weeks but I'm not going to lay the blame for that at the feet of my postie (I have loads of other ammo on that guy) The blame has to come from the upper management who have failed to sort this mess out before it got to this point.

sorry its not about changes to pensions, its about RM optiong out of the pension leaving people with the real possibility of losing £000's in pension payout. hardly a small matter to squabble over is it?
they maybe silly leaflets to you and i but its a cash cow for RM and given the new hours and conditions they propose a postie could be sacked for nort doing those silly leaflets within the time alloted.
i could go on but it seems RM can do no wrong even with trivial matters like workers pensions

well said but your poorly performing postie is just another example.RM dont train like they used to and in general guys are thrown out on deliveries and left to it.
it used to be people got a couple of weeks training but now its a few days at best.
usually in our office the same happens and they get thrown on deliveries too soon as we have been understaffed for months.
i see idiot posties in our office but the managers could care less as long as the mail is out of the office their job is 'done'

I know custard, actually I quite like my postie, he's totally useless at his job but is such a jolly chap I can't help but like him. When he does manage to bring the correct mail to my door he always greets me with a big old smile:D

Paid to walk & post? Yes you are right in one respect but we are also paid to sort our mail beforehand. I guess you are one of those people who think we go into the office in the morning & all our post is ready for us to take out. I am not saying that i should be on a massive wage but i don't like the idea of doing more work for alot less money. At the moment i can still earn a half decent wage through overtime & it looks like this will be going sooner or later, which i will have to accept. The like it or leave attitude that some of you are taking is one of the reasons why many people in this country can only find temporary jobs through agencies. We don't mind doing our jobs, but why should we agree to a deal that will see us over £1,000 worse off & our working conditions changed dramatically for the worse.

You should try being a nurse for a living - we wouldn't be allowed to strike, we have to put up with the conditions or leave the profession. It's a choice.
