Hi, i recently got hold of an Acer Aspire 5315

It's currently running on windows 7 64bit
Has 3GB of ram fitted

I have noticed its running very slow, like in slow motion, chrome slow to open web pages, and freezes with more than one tab open etc?

Should it be on windows 7, 32 bit? Does that make a difference?

And should i have nvidia on it like my old laptop (Acer aspire 7520)

I did have an acer aspire 7520 and it was really fast, i loved it

Any advice please?

Thanks

Hi, I have a policy (may be outdated, but works for me) that I wipe the laptop annually - i.e. use the windows function to set it up as new. So make sure you back up all your files etc first.

This usually means any crap (viruses, bloatware) that may be clogging up your CPU performance are started fresh.

One thing to note is that other forum members may disagree with me, and may think that a good antivirus + system cleanup tool is a better first step - I would agree, but I'm just a bit lazy to be honest.

Also, don't rule out the possibility that if it's an old laptop that's been used a lot, that there may be some performance deterioration of the components over time.

Take the bottom of the laptop. Find the fan in the top right hand corner. Remove the bit of card that is taped to it and the heatsink, undo the three screws holding the fan in and move it to one side, clean out all the fluff on the edge of the heatsink then put it all back together.

It isn't uncommon to find this wad either in the fan or attached onto the heatsink grille on a laptop of that age. That means the heatsink can't do its job so the CPU massively throttles its speed as it overheats.

That is your issue. Single core and underpowered.

You can put a dual core CPU in from a cost of around £4

It was shipped with Windows 7/32 bit. If you wanted to reinstall Windows, all the drivers and manuals are there. Go here to the Acer Support page First,
    https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/support

    - Find your FULL Model No. (5315 followed by more characters), and your SNID (Serial No.) on the laptop base. Connect and switch on the laptop, input those numbers into the "Find" bar OR "Restore my computer to Factory settings"

You will lose any data, but will have a faster laptop.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Quite wrong. It was shipped with Vista and it will still be a dog even with a clean install, until they change that CPU.

Read the page from Acer UK:

    Windows 7/32 bit.

    Windows 7/32 bit.

I don't need to read the page. It supports Windows 7, but it was shipped with Vista.

That is why your 7520 was better. It had a Dual Core processor and enhanced graphics capability.

    So what you need is

If yours currently has a Celeron M, then the Intel Core2 Duo T5450 will be a suitable upgrade.

You can buy them for two to three pounds.

Intel Core2 Duo Processor T5750 perhaps around £5.

Confirm the CPU that is in the machine before going forward.
