  • get the mother to put the car in her name, insure it with the son as a named driver, get the son to buy a £20 written off moped, he insures that in his name running up a no claims bonus, just an idea.

My understanding is that motorcycle and car no claims are not interchangeable.

Do you know of insurance companies where this is the case?

Will moped insurance and any associated no claims discount transfer to a car??

Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!
  • A couple of companies will accept no claims built up on a motorcycle to be transferred across to car insurance.

The one's I've come across so far are Tesco's, Direct Line & Norwich Union.

OK, if there are a couple of companies then I have the following points
get the mother to put the car in her name, insure it with the son as a named driver

    1) If the son is the main driver he must be stated as such.

    2) If only a few companies offer this then they may not be competitive so it may not be worth it (although if you are talking a really cheap moped then there isn't much to lose).

What lisyloo says is correct and to add to that, he would effectively be driving uninsured.
The consequences of this is, should he have an accident he could end up in jail for being uninsured as it is a criminal offence.
Scheming_Gypsy has already admitted to this criminal act.
  • How can a named driver be driving uninsured? it maybe bending the rules a little, but if insurers want to charge thousands for younger drivers people are going to search out loopholes, I do not think it's a criminal act, why would insurers ask about additional drivers if it was? if he had an accident he would just say it was his mums car, which it would be.

  • A few things I used to do to significantly reduce insurance:

    - Register owner of the car as the parent, take a policy in their name and name the young driver as a named driver.
    - Usually added more secondary drivers lowers the premium as the chance of the highest risk driver being in the vehicle lowers
    - Keep the car on a driver or garage if possible

Always found admiral, elephant and tesco quite good.

And even now my qoutes vary by hundreds, sometimes even 1000s!

Bending the rules? Its outright Insurance fraud and is treated as such!

If the kid is the main driver, not declaring him as such signficantly alters the risk, and hence premium of the policy.

sleep2much and jamieukonline, thought my post was clear enough but if you want it in Mickey Mouse language.
If you list a parent as a main driver and then the young son/daughter acts as the main driver, you will have lied on the application and the insurance then becomes null and void. You are therefore driving uninsured. Driving uninsured is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment.
I hope that is now clear to you both and if you don't believe me phone up any insurance company and ask.
