Help! Horrendous quotes for car insurance for 17 yr old!

Wonder whether anyone could help me - a friend of mine has just bought her 17 year old son a car (I know, she's mad, what can I say!). It's a Peugeot 106 and cost £2,500 - and she's had car insurance quotes for the same cost!!
Can anyone recommend anywhere that specialises in insuring young drivers and could give her advice on finding something that isn't going to break the bank? I know all the reasons why 17 yr olds are charged so much, but I just wonder if there's any alternative.
Btw, it's fully comp insurance so she knows her other option is 3rd party.
Thanks for your help.

Aside from shopping arround, taking a high excess and adding an older driver (as a secondary driver) to the policy, there isnt much more you can do other than bite the bullet.0

Sell the car, buy one for £400 and pay slightly less to insure it?
Sometimes adding secondary drivers to a quote lowers it.Happy chappy0 -
I've seen it mentioned on here several times that Quinn-direct insurance can be the cheapest option for young drivers.0

yep i agree with getting a cheaper car for him! Just not worth it until he has more years of driving experience behind him. an old banger would mean she can get 3rdparty instead. he can be given a better car for his 21st birthday!QUIDCO £2827 paid out since October 2007:D0

If she had bought a cheaper car maybe she would have been happy to go for third party, fire and theft.
Its a bit of a catch 22 situation. TP,F&T and hope there are no accidents or anything in the first year, add older more experienced drivers to the policy.
Has he passed his test?
If so take his pass plus as this can make a difference to the insurance quote too.
Can she, would she change the car for a cheap 1.1, group 1 insurance car?£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Kwikfit sometimes do young boys cheap insurance, they were running a much cheaper deal about 9 years ago for my son and my nephew got kwikfit a couple of months ago about £500 + when other quotes were £700 +0

even a cheaper car probably won't bring it down too much. the insurance companies are determined to make people drive without insurance by pricing young drivers out.
Some things to try:
pass plus
older driver on the policy as a named driver
tweak his job title a bit. this can affect the cost, don't go picking something that is nothing like his job but they don't normally list every job so you go for one similar. They may be one just as close but will drop the insurance a bit.
get an thatcham cat 1 imobiliser
get a tracker
increase the excess
will he really do as many miles as you put on the policy or did you go for the average? less miles = less time in the car = lower quote.
Slightly lower the value of the car. They may have paid over the odds and the insurance company might not pay out what she paid. Plus it'll be worth less in 6 months time.
When you calculate a lot of things the insurance might be cheaper than paying less and paying for the extras. Same with getting an old banger, you might save on the insurance but how much will repairs cost in comparison?
You can also get 10 month policies that give you a full years no claims with the likes of Admiral and Elephant.
I got a shock today, when i get a new job i want to get a new car and always fancied an impreza but the insurance was stupid. Today, 6 months after i last checked, i can get insured on an imported WRX STi with low mileage for £700. £600 cheaper than 6 months ago. If i wait till my insurance runs out it goes down to £600 with the extra years NCD0 -
Also... where did you put down for parking? have you a friend or neighbour who'll let him park on their drive? if you change the address and park it on a drive it might bring it down again.0
