What's the cheapest thing to buy and insure that you can keep on a public road?
I'm thinking moped or banger car with 3rd party only insurance?
Will be looking for something on eBay.
Doesn't have to be used for anything in particular, just legal to park it on a public road.

Any suggestions?

I have full car/motorcycle licence.

Only if the council will give you a licence to put it on a public highway. Even then it would be very time limited.

I often see trailers parked outside houses. If that is legal, it might be the cheapest option.

So feel free to explain what non-petty reasons you may have for wanting to simply take up a parking space on the public road. You clearly have no intention of actually using this vehicle, simply prevent others from parking somewhere. Is it outside your house, or somebody else's?

Are you looking for a cheap vehicle that you u can use and park on a public road, or are you looking for something just to dump on a public road and hog a space?

I lived in a terraced house that fronted directly on to the street. Casual motorists would park their cars outside the front door so you could not get a pram or wheelchair into your own house. People resorted to putting cones or chairs outside their doors (they still do) or plastered their windows with "Do not park here, access required for wheelchair" notices.

A pushbike - cheap to buy second hand, free to insure, legal to park on the road.........

Seriously, what are you wanting to actually do ? If you're after a cheap runabout then yes, bangernomics is the way to go. It's worth looking at the insurance options - quite often TPF&T is cheaper that TP only, and occasionally fully comp may be cheaper still, daft as it sounds.
