Isle of Wight is NOT in the Scottish Highlands!!!!!

Being a resident of the said Isle of Wight (5 miles off the south cost of UK) I have been trying to get E.Bay to stop including us in their list of 'places we do not send to' and of course they respond that although it is in their list offered to sellers, it is up to sellers to decide to whom they will sell. They refuse to remove us from this list under any circumstances, even our old MP tried and lost!!!

I have given up trying to tell individual sellers and e bay that the Isle of Wight is a COUNTY of the UK and has a Royal Mail Post Code. I even suggested they could sell to us after getting a quote for postage, as the odd less well known carriers do occasionally charge a couple of pounds more for larger items.

Royal Mail and most other well know carriers charge exactly the same postage/delivery charges as to most other parts of the UK. Well know companies such as QVC consider us in their Mainland only category due to no extra delivery charges no matter what the size of the item purchased, IDEAL World however, cancelled a recent order as they 'do not deliver to the Isle of Wight' even though I have been a customer for several years and never had a problem with previous deliveries, so it appears to be spreading. No chance to pay extra delivery charges, nothing helpful at all!

I recently tried to order 2 pop-up pill dispensers online from a company called NRShealthcare.co.uk. These 2 items cost £11 and fit into a small Royal Mail parcel category.
When completing the online paperwork up popped their invoice showing a delivery charge of £16.00!!!:(

In the politest of ways I e-mailed them advising that this must be a mistake? NO they referred me to their terms and although the Isle of Wight was not mentioned by name their policy to which they referred me included "Highlands and Islands".

Again I politely informed them that as they were using Royal Mail for delivery, once checked and corrected I would pay the correct postage - NO response whatsoever.

I then ordered the exact same items from another supplier, paid £2.85 for postage and received them the very next day.

Being in the category of a seller or supplier you would think that companies would at least investigate this problem, or do they not sell to the Isle of Dogs, and other such named parts of the UK based solely on a name and not geography. Have they never heard of The annual Isle of Wight Festival, and Besitval to mention 2 events that attract thousands of guests and participants!!

I was also told once from a seller in China, that the reason was that so many of the ferry boats have sunk and he had lost so many parcels he no longer took orders from us residents:eek:

These companies need to have a geography lesson, or are they that well off they just shrug their shoulders at several thousand of potential sales.;)

Climbing off soap box now - rant over (for now)!

Highlands and Islands This only refers to the Scottish Highlands and SCOTTISH Islands - no other parts of the UK & NI

It is the definition used by RM

Indeed, I agree, but it is what they use to include the Isle of Wight

It does have a formal, legal definition as it is an electoral region.

The company sounds like someone not to do business with if they appear so cavalier about who they will deliver to

I wonder if they refuse to deliver to the Isle of Dogs and Isle of Shelley, maybe Thorney island as well. :rotfl::rotfl:

    And the Channel Islands!

We are part of the UK yet some sellers (even in the UK) think we are international.

The amount some of them try and charge is just plain ridiculous.

I've never had a problem with getting stuff from China though

Unfortunately you've just demonstrated one of the reasons for this thread - a lack of basic geographical knowledge about the UK, and what the letters actually stand for - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Sorry for pulling you up on this, but it's an issue for people in NI as well - some companies won't post items to NI, even though they'll be using Royal Mail - "oh you live in Ireland, we don't post to there". I know that RM have strict rules on what can & can't be sent though the post (e.g. aerosols), but this is usually down to ignorance of the seller, rather than the item itself.

I think the problem, aside for it costing extra, to send anywhere one's not familiar with is that it'd take a lot of extra time/faffing to work out how to do it....

Sellers use all manner of services etc to post stuff off - and it might throw a spanner in their works if they usually "just drop this in the box at the end of the road" and suddenly it might be different, and or a different price, or complex.

You should be targetting the carriers to get a consistent approach, so the issue disappears.... not moan about individual sellers and posting/sales boards that let individual sellers post adverts.

Thing is PN, for Royal Mail it isn't any different. Probably a good way to catch out those who say they're using RM but aren't... or those who just have dodgy address databases/websites. My address has a / in it and many websites just can't cope! So I can believe they go "Isle of Wight... Isle... can't deliver..." regardless of the actual carrier

I get the same sometimes and understand your frustration.

We are not in the Highlands and, even if we were, RM postage is the same! Drives me nuts. Most companies are fine so it's just the occasional one where the staff don't understand that even though it's 80 miles from Glasgow we are not 80 miles NORTH of it.

    Our postcode is part of this PA2 8, PA20 0, PA20 9, PA21 2, PA22 3, PA23 7, PA23 8, PA24 8, PA25 8, PA26 8, PA27 8, PA28 6, PA29 6, PA30 8, PA31 8, PA31 9, PA32 8, PA33 1, PA34 4, PA34 5, PA35 1, PA36 4, PA37 1, PA38 4, PA41 7, PA42 7, PA43 7, PA44 7, PA45 7, PA46 7, PA47 7, PA48 7, PA49 7, PA60 7, PA61 7, PA62 6, PA63 6, PA64 6, PA65 6, PA66 6, PA67 6, PA68 6, PA69 6, PA70 6, PA71 6, PA72 6, PA73 6, PA74 6, PA75 6, PA76 6, PA77 6, PA78 6, PA80 5 all of which seems to be located in another country. No idea why some companies charge so much.

Our NHS authority is part of NHS Highlands though our bus passes are administered, and part of, Strathclyde. The bus passes also gives us cheaper access to train journeys within Strathclyde -

"Reduced fares on ScotRail services which start and finish within the scheme's boundaries and on Glasgow's Subway"

If you're interested then go to http://www.spt.co.uk/travelcards/concessions/# and click on the orange link 'Strathclyde Region' - it goes all the up to Coll and past Oban.

I feel a rant coming on!

    Gers,

The simple problem is geography! Most HGV's can travel from the Midlands to Glasgow in one shift/hit (with appropriate rest periods). The estimated drive time is 7hrs 30 mins. To drive the extra 80 miles/2hours would incur another shift. That is the simple reason for extra transport costs.

The RM is different. They are bound by the Universal Service Obligation.
