When postage is by Royal Mail it is unfair to exclude people from the Isle of Wight, yes. But when sending larger items, the couriers often charge substantially more. It depends what it is of course, but large items cost a small fortune to get to the Isle of Wight (and the Scottish Highlands too - many large item couriers often don't even go that far, so there's less competition) so if you keep in mind that Ebay is a place where people sell washing machines and sofas etc, then you will see why they won't change these exclusion areas. For businesses selling these types of goods, the difference between delivering to London or Edinburgh and delivering to the Isle of Wight or Scottish Highlainds is a difference of £50-100. So they decide not to deliver there.

I am quite happy to pay for the delivery of large items although I can generally find one who does not.

I do object to being charged extra for something than can be sent by Royal Mail such as a small packet packed in a large box filled with polystyrene. Or even being charged extra when an item IS sent by Royal Mail which has happened.

I also object to companies who advertise free delivery to mainland UK with no exclusions but then try to charge for delivery to a part of the UK mainland. They are entitled to choose not to deliver to any area but should say so. The company concerned were reported to trading standards who were investigating such cases.

We are part of the UK yet some sellers (even in the UK) think we are international.

The amount some of them try and charge is just plain ridiculous.

I've never had a problem with getting stuff from China though

You're not. You didn't take part in the recent general election, did you? You've your own post office, stamps, coins and mail system.

In fact, you're not really living on a channel island, are you?

I recently ordered an item and was given the options of DHL at £4.99, Yodel at £3.99 or DPD £0 surcharge.

Well, I see it entirely differently. It most certainly is NOT the case that MOST couriers charge more to deliver to the Isle of Wight!!

My point was not about extra costs incurred, but rather about extortionate costs and yes, 'ripping people off'. simply put, Royal Mail has mostly always been the main 'mail' carrier for like forever so it really is not being unreasonable to expect that 'mail' is sent that way. The point in question was a company was quoting me £16 to send a very small parcel (which is up to shoe box size! for £2.85). Not sure any savvy enough to know of a company other than Royal Mail would accept a small parcel of this size for less than £2.85 that Royal Mail charges. I receive many parcels from Hermes and they certainly DO NOT charge any more for deliveries to the Isle of Wight nor indeed, from the Isle of Wight!!

You are of course entitled to your opinion with regard to choosing to live on the Isle of Wight, I did not choose to be born here! These problems are relatively new occurrence since the likes of the geographically uneducated e bay came along. Almost all sellers have a sufficient knowledge of the country in which they have been born, or chosen to live in, and your criteria should apply to them too -- they choose to live in the UK and sell, so should for their own sake in business know a basic geography.

I often see that sellers put delivery to +++++ any other area please contact for postage/delivery price and that at least gives us a chance to accept the charge, but those that don't are obviously that well off that they can potential ignore many thousands of potential customers.

We on the Isle of Wight, and others that have posted here with a similar problem, are not totally unaware that there will always be less know couriers who will try and charge extortionately to places they feel will cost them more, but hey, give us the chance to accept that the charge is reasonable and not extortionate, and a total mis-use of the system. In just this one instance this company tried to charge £16 for a delivery that would have actually COST them £2.85, that to me is boardering on the criminal as extortion. They would have pocketed £13.15 for their quoted charge - the items only cost £11!!!!

We are when it suits us ;)

Point taken - I just always consider us to be a part of it given that the UK have a big impact over here

Still annoys though when companies consider us international when we aren't.

As we are in the English channel, surely that makes us a channel island?

A bit like the falklands, really. Or Montserrat.

There has to be some pay off for paying very little tax.

Have you considered that perhaps it has to do with additional costs they will face if the goods become faulty?

Retailers (or at least ones who are financially astute) will factor in failure rates into their pricing. If they sell items to islanders and that item becomes faulty, they may have to arrange & pay for collection or for a engineers visit at a cost greater than if the customer lived in birmingham for example.

Also worthwhile noting that royal mail usually operates these routes at huge losses.
