Non, vous etes un Isle de la Manche, n'est-ce pas?As we are in the English channel, surely that makes us a channel island?
Back to the point... Doesn't IoW have a Portsmouth / Hampshire postcode? So if the seller or courier is keying on that, you'll possibly get one result but if they are picking up on the "Island needing a Ferry" factor it will come out differently.
The OP is right in that they should have the option of challenging courier costs and asking for RM delivery - though the seller also has the option of not selling to you.I need to think of something new here...0 -

Do you need a deemster to deem that?“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
Have you considered that perhaps it has to do with additional costs they will face if the goods become faulty?
Retailers (or at least ones who are financially astute) will factor in failure rates into their pricing. If they sell items to islanders and that item becomes faulty, they may have to arrange & pay for collection or for a engineers visit at a cost greater than if the customer lived in birmingham for example.
Also worthwhile noting that royal mail usually operates these routes at huge losses.F
Firstly apologies for not knowing the correct proceedure for adding Quotes!
I do take your point, but if manufacturers can give International Waranties on goods purchased outside of country of residence, - not sure who but it is to do with computers, laptops etc. this is not an insurmountable problem. However, to get back to my initial post, the items I am posting about are 2 weekly pill dispensers costing £5.50 each. so hard to quantify that with the points you raise.
Your point with regard to larger items is to me anyway, not relevant as for the reasons you state, most people in my position would consider the problems involved with returns, repairs etc. and would therefore make the decision to purchase locally. We have, Tesco, Currys, PC World, Sainsburys, Morrisons, and Euronics to name a few, so would come to our own conclusions with regard to purchasing off Island as with so many suppliers on island, would mean the need to purchase elsewhere is not something we would consider. We are obviously aware of realistic problems that can occur, my reason for making this point being the lack of knowledge geographically and yes, with regard to couriers by people in the business of selling online.
Nothing you say can justify the extra £13.15 I would have been charged. If, we purchase an item from ebay, QVC etc. and the item (under a certain weight of course) would have to be returned at our expense, so we would have considered this before ordering. Certain larger item from QVC are even collected if not required, at no cost to us!
Of course, at the end of the day, it is entirely up to a seller to decide who he wants as a customer, and they can, and do refuse to sell to us, BUT as far as E. Bay goes, it is E bay who make the list of places not to deliver too, and there is insufficient correct reasoning in adding us to that list, but they just won't listen and refuse to talk to anyone about this. All we want to know is NOT we can put you on the list if we want, or sellers are free to sell to whomever they want, but WHY are we included on that list with some very dubious places, (I will look the list up to show my point in a later thread). This list means that many sellers just use the list as is, thinking that ebay know something they don,t and that is very bad for business. I always make a point of contacting sellers if they are offering something I would like to purchase, and luckily for me many do say, 'oh I didn't realise' and then alter their listings and they get a sale, and get listed on the Island Social Network as someone who will now sell to us " to be avoided at all costs" customers.
Recently I was interested in an item, which showed "doesn't post to Isle of Wight", so I wrote as usual, and the guy came back, full of apologies having checked with Royal Mail and Hermes to confirm the information I had given him, and we now have a good relationship on ebay and he is spreading the word that we are not an alien species with two heads and large ears.
Just seen a question on Tipping Point and it mentioned Barry Island in Wales, no complaints from them I see?0 -

You made the same error as unforeseen.

mainland GB and NI
If you say UK then the words mainland, and, and NI are redundant.
Well....up to a point.
"Mainland UK" would refer to the main island of the UK; the parts of England, Wales and Scotland that are contiguous.
So "Mainland UK and NI" refers to those parts and Northern Ireland, but not, for example, Orkney, the Isle of Wight, or Anglesey.
I don't think this is the definition the poster intended but it is a valid subset, if not particularly useful.0
