He was top scorer in his year group and his tutor has said he has been the best, the most consistent and the hardest working student he has had the pleasure go teach in his entire career.

I just about held it together when he was saying all that but there was definitely welling up going on.

Well, I jolly well am now!

Michaels, have you tried the wheelie bin? That's a sort of an outhouse! :D

Superb - richly deserved, and just what we were expecting, knowing already how diligently he's worked for it. Well done him, and well done you too.

I like the mottled carpet best, but the stripes are nice too.

So do I. I like mottled carpets in general - much more forgiving than absolutely plain ones, but not in your face or drawing attention to themselves. I think mottled black and white in particular can go well with black without being overpowering. I have black leather sofas - not my choice, but in inherited them from LNE. To tie them to the red curtains, and what's soon to be a red feature chimney breast, I got cushions for them that look like this in close up:

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

We changed a plain beige carpet for a stripey one, adds a bit of life to the hall.

And doesn't show marks anything like as much as a plain carpet does!

That reminds me of when we had our back room extended. when it was nearly ready 'twas time to order the carpet so off we went to the carpet showroom. I'll never forget the salesman's face when he asked "and has Madam any colour in mind?" to which Mum replied "Yes, dirt colour" :rotfl:

She settled on a mottled oatmeal as the best compromise for dark and light coloured dirt ;)

All this talk of decorating is making me wish I had the motivation to deal with my house.

There are a number of things I'd like to have done..... an ensuite, some bifold doors to the garden, a hole punched through a wall, fitted wardrobes in two rooms, etc. etc. etc., and because those things involve some structural alterations, there doesn't seem any point in redecorating or laying carpets till it's done.

This has been going on for several years, though! :(

Also holding me back is the thought of having to find/deal with builders, as I had two bad experiences in the past.

And not least having to move all the 'stuff' so that the work could actually be done.

I bought a lovely stripy stair runner several years ago, and it's still rolled up waiting to be laid. :(

Pyxis if it makes you feel any better I have a roll of vinyl flooring standing in the corner of the hall which has been waiting nearly 2 years to be laid in the bathroom. And 2 new radiators in their packaging, which have been leaning against the walls of the living room and the dining room waiting to be installed in DS's bedroom (which can't be done until the walls are replastered, which in turn can't be done because his room is so full of carp he doesn't get around to getting rid of) and the boxroom, (which can't be done because it's full of carp OH can't bear to part with) again for over 2 years
