Thanks for the thoughts folks. Back certainly seems OK at present and I'm only putting the earth back in short stints, just to be on the safe side - and because it's still too hot to do much longer at a time.
That shifting tons of stuff twenty-plus years ago was coal on steam engines when I was a volunteer fireman at what's nowadays called a "heritage railway" - and I'm pleased to note that I haven't forgotten the technique - back straight, head back to tension the spine and do the work with the legs and arms.
It'll be ages before I can do the next bed so I'll have plenty of time to recover - that spot still has leeks and sweetcorn in it.
The other two will be even longer, there's broccoli, calabrese, cabbages, brussels sprouts and parsnips in those - the latter two being what will really hold them up. That said, the brussels are starting to form sprouts now and I did have a little prod around the largest parsnip foliage the other day to find quite a decent sized crown already, although I have no idea how long the root is of course.0 -
Car doors still open at the front of house, unloading .... but already DOOF!0

Currently experiencing a "loud mum". DOOFers' mum.
Sitting round are: active granny, DOOFers mum, mum's ape-built bf, 2 boyteens, 1 girlteen.
I can hear, very clearly, every word the DOOFers' mum says. Every word. I can hear NOTHING of what the others are saying, I can't even tell if they are speaking.... nothing at all from them. They're all in the same conversation, so how come one has to be so out of sync with the rest?
Mums ..... are ..... bl00dy .... loud!
Why?0 -

God knows - the only ones I have around here are Mum Spadgers, Mum Starlings, Mum Collared Doves, etc. and the noisy ones are their offspring demanding to be fed.
The nearest I have to a "doofer" is Barney, the Lakeland Terrier next-door but one, who has a wooden ball which he keeps getting stuck between the fence and the shed. He then growls at it until he works out how to get it back
Well, all that earth has now gone back in the hole, ready for tomorrow's rain to consolidate it. I was a bit surprised that it all went back in considering that what came out was well compacted and what's gone back in is nicely broken up and loose. I guess that the "surplus" has gone towards the levelling, one end of the ground is about 4-5" lower than the other but I've filled the boxed-in bed to be level.
A couple of days rain is needed now, to finish breaking it up, then I can bung the manure and topsoil on top for the autumn/winter weather to blend it nicely in ready for next year's sowings. In the meantime I can make the netting covers to keep out all the little nasties that take pleasure in trying to eat/destroy my crops.
Off for a well-earned shower now.
Update - and now I feel a whole lot better :T0 -

I always had to be loud for Josh to hear me due to a hearing impairment, a couple of operations improved things a little but not by enough for me not to have to raise the volume of my voice beyond normal conversation levels.
It's one of the things I find hardest when he comes home, everything has to be blaring for him to hear it clearly, gives me a blooming headache now.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Oh dear, Pastures
I suppose it must be to do with the pitch of the voice.
Glad you know how to look after your back Chris
This morning we have to remember to go and feed DGD's rabbit as she and her family are away for a few days. This afternoon our chiropodist is coming, then after that I have to go to the dentist. What a fun-packed day in store :rotfl:0 -
We walked out to see the seals today. It was lovely! We had the beach to ourselves, some gulls, and a few hundred seals. It's not that far. Maybe two miles each way over the sand, but hardly anybody else bothers.

Link worked for me. I saw a wet expanse of sand with the wibbly/wobbly undulations you get when the tide goes out and leaves thousands of ridges.... which are nigh on impossible to walk on as they're not wide enough for a whole foot, so you're forever having your toe in a ridge and heel on top, or vice versa. It's where you see the little signs that things are burrowed under the sand as you see a swirly round of sand atop the water/sand where they've burrowed down.
Seals are Norfolk probably ....0
