I suspect a lot get carried away with fripperies... why have a £5 shiny bog roll holder, when you can have a bespoke made, hand-turned, silver plated one for £395?
My planned glass walling features are entirely practical.... honest.0 -

Just back from athletics. I did look for the start of the meteor shower, but too cloudy in my part of Herts. Every year I say I'll watch the Perseids but it never happens. One day...Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I can not understand the premium people are willing to pay for 'new' or 'just refurb' properties.
Indeed. Even worse, to my mind, are the people who won't consider putting in an offer on a house that's cluttered with the current owner's stuff, but are quite enthusiastic about doing so once it's been tidied up a bit. They can be seen on the sort of shows where some expert helps sellers whose houses aren't getting any offers. The seller's stuff won't still be there by the time you move in! One house buying show I saw years ago gave a handy tip for house hunters - if the room is cluttered, look at the ceiling and imagine a floor that size. But nobody seems to be able to do that any more.blahugh!
I must admit, I think I'd be wary of new builds after all the problems I've heard about snagging and more.
One I bought wasn't new, it was nearly new, but even with that, huge probs came to light after .I'd bought it, which luckily were seen to by insurance.
My home is pretty old........ about 120 years old. I reckon that if it's been standing that long, it should be ok for a few more years!
It had a new roof put on just before I bought it, though! (30+ years ago!)
I agree. My house that I own (built c1970) has certainly had a lot fewer problems than the 2002 house that I rented during 2005-9.PasturesNew wrote: »I suspect a lot get carried away with fripperies... why have a £5 shiny bog roll holder, when you can have a bespoke made, hand-turned, silver plated one for £395?
I'm sure you're right, PN.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Our home is about a century old and is four bedrooms. No driveway though. There's a rarely-used dining room and a conservatory. One of the bedrooms is used as an office. The location is perfect for us. The neighbours havent changed in the last ten years. Don't blame them. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0

The neighbours in mum and dad's road stay pretty static too, apart from the rental on the corner (the last one stayed over 10 years - their child was pre school when they moved in and now she is at high school!), it is all owner occupiers.
Appears the only time there are changes are when someone dies (although it tends to be that offspring that used to live there then move back in), or they move in retirement to sunnier climes....but all were young families when they moved in (the ones next door had very young children when they arrived, not so young now with the youngest just turning 18)We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Yes, my part of my road also seems to have longstayers.
Opposite me is a house converted into two flats, one is rented, but the family who live there have been there a while, now. The other was until recently owned by people who have been there a few years, but then they moved to another flat and are renting this one out to students, so those people come and go. They don't cause any problems re. noise or parking, etc.
As far as I am aware, all the other houses are owned, and their occupants have been there a while. My immediate neighbours have been there 17 and 10 years, and some of the people opposite have been there longer than I have ( which is 30+ years!).
It's not very often I see For Sale signs in any part of the road, and very, very rarely a To Let sign.
I'm feeling quite blessed, really!
Hope it lasts as long as I do!
I've always assumed I'll be here for the duration, but I never say never, and if the street were to radically change in such a way that I felt constantly anxious, harassed, threatened or whatever, or there were loads of noise, ASB or general ill-feeling, I think I'd probably move.(I just lurve spiders!)

Stargazing?
I wanted to see them, but as usual I couldn't stay awake.
Binge-watching Netflix. You can't see many actual stars from here let alone meteoroids as we're too built-up.
Having said that I was out in Putney mid-evening in the mid-80s and I thought I saw a terrorist incident. It looked like a plane was coming down in flames (and there were attempts by terrorists to actually do that). This wasn't one though; there was nothing on the news and nobody else saw it. This was almost ten years before the internet, but I did much more recently came across a group of people online who saw the exact same thing, all concluding it was a meteor. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
