A nice bit of salacious gossip for you. Not that I'm interested in such things, of course. ;)

That's an incredible story, and so relatively recent.
The manner of his death - you just couldn't make it up.

That would make an fantastic film or short serial.

There's nobody in our street using the food recycling caddies any longer. Unfortunately, the foxes worked out how to open the lids, and we all got fed up with rotten food scattered round the streets and our gardens.

Previously, we were told to put food waste in the green garden waste bins, and that worked well for us. However, I expect the composting centres were over-run with vermin.

So that's how Barnet works. Something needs changing, so change it, but don't worry if the changed system does not work.

Same system here. The foxes have worked out that knocking the bins over dislodges the handles, and the food spills out conveniently for them.

We have similar 'locking' handles on our bins. I was very worried initially that the so-called locking handles wouldn't be any hindrance to a wily fox. To be honest, despite having loads of foxes here, (there's one barking as we speak!), I am surprised they haven't worked out how to open them.

However, I very, very rarely have any meat/fish products in mine, and when I do, I either freeze the meat/fish scraps/bones and put them in the bin frozen, so that it has less smell to tempt foxes, or else I get up early and put those scraps into the bin first thing in the morning, before the bin men come.

If my compost bin weren't so full, I could probably put virtually all my food waste into that, as most of it is vegetable peelings, fruit skins, tea bags and the like. Otherwise, I only get the odd bit of cheese rind, or a very occasional piece of stale bread, or the odd occasion when I decide I really don't like something I'm eating, but that's quite rare, and usually when I've not been well, so food has got left to go 'off'.

When I ate meat, my dogs were quite useful as scrap bins! Things like chicken skin/gristle, bits of fat from meat, etc. went down a storm! Even carrot tops and broccoli stalks!
The only thing they wouldn't eat was fish skin.

It was hoolie-time here last night, too.
At the moment, it is incredibly calm. Do I dare look out of the window?

Supposed to get windy again later, though, and all weekend.

My bedroom faces SSE, and one panel of its bay window faces SSW, so with the prevailing wind being SW, that panel gets a right battering.
During the "Hurricane" of 1987, it sounded like the window would blow in any minute, so I did actually get up and go and sleep in the spare bedroom that night.
    The window did survive, though!

    STARGATE UNIVERSE

For anyone who's interested in the Stargate franchise, there's a re-run of Stargate Universe starting next Monday, 24th September at 5pm on Pick.

I'm particularly pleased, as I missed the very first episode first-time round.

Well, that was a night! Dropped off to sleep, all quiet this morning. Been outside and haven't spotted anything obviously missing/wrong.

I did have to go out last night and retrieve a bucket that was blowing around the patio - that'd been tucked inside another couple of buckets at the end of the garden.

My gate took a battering. Good job the handyman "fixed" it all the other week else I think it would've probably blown open and flapped until it broke. The bolt and latch were a little stiff this morning where the wind had been forced against it... but it held fast.

Can't check the roof without walking up the road and looking back... but no tiles obvious on the ground.

Our foxes just up the road from GDB can't open the food bins. Couldn't use any other bins for food waste as they are only collected every two weeks and even after a week in the summer heat the food caddy honks.

I'm actually surprised there is not more foliage down today considering the trees are still in leaf. We made the good decision to take the canopy off the gazebo earlier in the week when it was a bit windy otherwise I suspect it would have been shredded - taking it down properly for winter is still on the to do list as well as the pool which luckily had gained a couple of inches of water in the bottom after we drained it a couple of weeks ago which kept it in place.
    I think....

Your food waste is only collected every two weeks?
    Gosh, that's rough.

Mind you, mine doesn't usually smell.....for reasons in previous post.
Any smelly scraps get frozen until the night before/morning of collection.
I usually have to attach a reminder note to the caddy, so that I don't forget the frozen scraps.

I also found that if there's anything potentially smelly in the caddy, opening up spent teabags and scattering the contents in the caddy over the smelly food often acts as an odour absorber, as do coffee grounds, but I don't have many of them.

If I had a lot of animal protein waste, I'd seriously consider getting a wormery. As it is, I wouldn't have enough to feed them on.

We don't have a food waste collection at all - not that that's a problem for me because I don't create much.

The vast majority of food waste I have is veg peelings, offcuts, etc - which go in the compost bin or garden waste bin depending on what and how easily compostable they are.

New car has arrived at the garage ready for handover next week (needs some adaptions done first). They sent me a video of it pre valet, pre adaptions, pre everything....boy does it look good.

    Getting excited now.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Wells is lovely. It's great to walk round to Holkham on the beach, then back through the pine woods. Two completely terrains. Afterwards, treat yourself to a pancake on the Dutch barge moored on the quay. :)

We've stopped there twice now. It's a long drive from here though. L-o-n-g road from Brum out to there, or seems it.
Lovely area though. Nice people too.
The driving is about four times as good as it is down here as well!
