For some reason my father was always known by a name totally unlike either of his baptismal names. (e.g., called Martin John but known as Fred).
He did at least have his real name on all official documents though.0 -
Re. your post 774, would the surname not give a clue? Or was her surname a common one?
If not the surname, what about the first name? Might ring the odd bell.... maybe she has said, in passing, "I like the name suchand -such".
What about adoption records in the area where one was born....... if they were adopted it might shorten the list. But maybe you can't get access to those, silly me, especially when they might be alive still.
I would be quite excited to think I might have an unknown half-sibling,(I just lurve spiders!)

"I'd like to get XXX DNA tested".
Say you are thinking of setting up a hairbrush cleaning service, and ask whether you can practise on his brush. Keep a couple of hairs. Job done.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Not seen him since 1991 and he's 300 miles away .... so it'd take a lot of stealth to turn up and find any excuse to get a swab in his mouth
I think you can get DNA from a hair follicle as well, hence GDB's reference to hairbrushes. It has to be a viable follicle, though.
I had a go on that link, for fun, and found out that an old Aunt of mine had been born the same year as her sister! (Not twins). I felt very sorry for my gran!

Good luck Pastures! I hope she's in, and that they're suitable.0

That link was interesting.
Firstly, there was a steamer with the name in question, so most of the entries were port departures/arrivals. I did wonder if it had taken part in Dunkirk!
However, one ancestor featured a lot as he was Chairman/Committe member of some sort of trade organisation, and another was a postman.
They seem to have been a law-abiding lot, though, because the only offence I found was my 'naughty' grandfather who got fined for some sort of traffic offence in the 1930s!(I just lurve spiders!)

But, it's a nice piece anyway, so I'll easily be able to find a home for it somewhere around.
This looks like a perfect match of what it is: https://www.wayfair.co.uk/Breakwater-Bay-Sharpley-Ladder-175cm-Bookcase-BRKB1380.html
EDIT: I've now moved some stuff about as I had an idea what to do ... so I'm now at the stage where I've moved out existing bits ...to the centre of the room... wiped/cleaned the whole corner and floor ... and moved the new piece + 1 other piece into that spot.
And then came to a complete halt as I've a pile of stuff and a small coffee table and a storage box slap bang in the middle of the room
I'll leave it like that for while, see how I like the new arrangement ... and work out what to do with the stuff now cluttering up this room.
I have found an outside solar/security light I was sure I had/was around here somewhereBut still no cordless screwdriver.
It's a pity you haven't got a remote control that would turn it on so you could hear where it was by listening for the whirring.
(Except that, if you've left the bit on it, it might then start drilling something you'd rather it didn't.)

It's been a gorgeous day here, though windy enough this morning that the Seabird Interstation Race got cancelled. I did a bit of chopping rose bush (pruning) until discovered an ants nest under a pile of dead leaves. At which point I left the gardening for today.

I've always poured a whole kettle of boiling water on them.... after 3-4 goes they're usually all dead. Saves you having to go out/remember/buy some special ant stuff. Just pop out when you remember and do it every few hours or a couple of times a day or when you remember/see them.0
