Not only is it free to go on to the platform, they had a man from the local railway company giving things away. I came away with two plastic season ticket holders, but he was also giving away lamp shades - well, he thought he was giving away buckets and spades for the kids, but we know better!

Is there a name for a bucket fetish? :D

    Lampshade fetish, you mean.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Are you proposing that the spades get used for stirring things?

Looking through dead people records .... decided to have a quick look at the family of paternal gt-grandfather's brother's wife's family.

I'd got her "story" in that she'd married, had children, then her husband had died when he was squashed against a wall by a bolting horse, leaving her as a pregnant widow with 9 children.... bit of bad luck there!

Roll on 17 years and she's off to Canada with two of her adult daughters - but it would appear her sons were also/already in Canada and, come WW1, they enlisted and one died!

Looking back into her early days wasn't much better as her dad had died (aged 45) when she was just 8.

It's really sad looking into past lives as many families are just plagued with strange and early deaths, disasters and doom.

No real healthcare for most before the middle of the 20th Century. What was there was not as good as it is today.
    No antibiotics etc.
People who became ill, either got better or died.
My mum was born in 1924. She said it was fairly common for people to die of appendicitis, and lots of other things back then before WWII I think people often didn't get help until too late.

    :A

I remember seeing a period drama on TV once.......can't remember what the programme was, but I think it was set in the 1900s or maybe the 1910s/20s.
Might have been Dr. Finlay's Casebook.
Anyway, there was a woman who for years hadn't dared set foot outside the house because of what she considered to be a curse.

Long story short, the 'curse' she had endured for years and years was a urinary fistula, a hole in the bladder which caused urine to leak into the vagina. Because of this, urine would escape constantly via the vagina, causing incontinence over which she had no control. Hence she was housebound, due to the shame of being constantly wet and smelly, and needing to wash all the time.

It was a drama, but it is an actual condition which can occur, but which now is put right straight away by surgery. Imagine having had to endure that for years, and never go out. :(
And all because she had no money for doctors. :(

I'm attempting to reduce my caffeine intake.

That's means banning the Diet Coke/ Pepsi as its hidden caffeine. Very irritating when it's the cold drink of choice.

If GDB2222's fair is on the station platform, do you need to buy s train ticket to join? Do platform tickets still exist.

I was amazed to cover how little caffeine there is in coke compared to coffee.
    I think....

    Heartbroken. :(
Took New Dog to see my friend this afternoon. We went for a walk with her dog. We had two balls, but both dogs kept chasing the same ball as each other. There were a few growly arguments about it, and then suddenly there was a fight. New Dog had poor Friend Dog pinned to the ground with her jaws round her neck, and was resisting all our efforts to get the two dogs apart. Mercifully, it seems she got her teeth into Friend Dog's collar rather than her flesh, and the collar was old and worn, and it broke, enabling Friend Dog to wriggle free. We each got hold of our own dog and pulled them away from each other.
Friend Dog was shaken and scared, but no blood was drawn. New Dog, having calmed down, forgot all about it within half a minute, and was behaving in a friendly manner to Friend Dog and not understanding why she was cowering in fear. My friend is a friend in a million, and once we were both assured that her dog was OK, was everything I could have asked for, supporting me through my shock and upset.
DD and I have discussed it, and we don't see how we can keep her. Because of my working hours, any dog we have will have to go to doggy daycare, or get walked by a dog walker - and they won't accept her if she attacks other dogs. It wouldn't be fair to expect DD to be responsible for taking her to the park if she might have to deal with an incident like that, and I can't do all the walking myself. The whole thing is unmanageable.
DD and I are both devastated, and DS, although much less of a "dog person" than we are, is sad that we are so upset. New Dog is so delightful to humans - friendly and enthusiastic but also gentle, and altogether lovely, as well as graceful and beautiful and a superb runner. But we can't see how we can make it work if she can't be trusted with other dogs.
    :(

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
