But then, when a family member died, they'd sometimes have a family photo taken, including the dead person (it was often a child) _pale_ as a memorial.
That was one of the creepy bits in the movie "The Others".:eek:There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Considering that they sell to people who don't buy mattresses very often, and may be utter fools, you'd think it would be in Ikea's interests to label the things in a fool-proof manner?
It'd never occur to me that a mattress only went one way up because ... what about when you turn them over?0 -

So far this morning I have:
- had a bath, washed my hair ... realised the bathroom needs a deep clean this weekend.
- made a coffee.....
Then it went downhill - as I was leaving the kitchen I caught my elbow on the metal slot in the doorframe that the door closer goes into ...so then had to spend 2-3 minutes lying on the sofa going "ow, ow, ow, ow, ow,ow, ow" and feeling very sad.Hope your elbow is much better now
So far this morning, DD and I between us have fed New Dog, bathed her - so she now smells of honeysuckle (!) dog shampoo rather than of dirty kennel - and taken her to the park. I am now about to have a shower myself - no point in doing that before the dog bath, and afterwards we wanted to take her straight out so she could dry in the sunshine. But then, when a family member died, they'd sometimes have a family photo taken, including the dead person (it was often a child) _pale_ as a memorial.
I guess in a culture where almost every family lost at least one child and most families lost several, attitudes to child death were a bit different from now.PasturesNew wrote: »It'd never occur to me that a mattress only went one way up because ... what about when you turn them over?
You don't turn modern mattresses over. You just turn them round - swapping the head end for the foot end (and of course, if you're a couple, swapping one person's side for the other person's).
My first new mattress in ages was a few years ago - my first of the kind that you don't turn over. I had chosen the wrong "hardness/softness" for my tastes, and it just made me feel too hot to sleep, which is most unusual for me. I ended up turning it over because the underside was less "fluffy" and didn't make me so hot, although it wasn't ideal. It enabled me to get some sleep in those first however many days you have to try it for before you can get the free exchange (from Benson's IIRC). The replacement was one "level" harder on their hardness/softness scale, and I love it.
In other news, New Dog is now 10 days post op, and is allowed to run about off lead. We threw the ball for her at the park. It didn't take long to wear her out - partly because the whippet half of her is likely to tire quickly anyway, and partly because being in kennels and then having to take things easy post-op have probably left her a bit unfit. She enjoyed it a lot, anyway. Here's a picture of her being worn out once we got home:

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Today I have been mostly gardening.
I started off picking yet another crop of runner beans - those things don't seem to know when to stop. Still, I'd have been complaining if they hadn't produced any beans at all, and I am rather partial to them.
Next, I decided to change the patio wall planters. I took down the old ones which were, in retrospect, a mistake. They are like a panel with half a dozen pouches which initially looked good stuffed with assorted pansies but when the hot weather came the plants suffered badly because the pouches aren't very big so don't hold much water. The replacements are each like half of a 50cm hanging basket, the sort with holes in the sides to put trailing plants as well as the plants on top - and have a decent size water reservoir, so should work better.
Having done those I decided it was time to tidy up the long planters underneath them, taking out the straggly pansies that went in last autumn. They did pretty well and looked good at first but the Beast from the East and the hot, dry summer, didn't do them any good. I've been loathe to pull them up until now because they still kept flowering, however I have more to go in when those have grown on so could do with the space.
Whilst doing that, I found what had happened to the supposedly perennial sweet peas that I put in there in the spring and hadn't seen any sign of since - they'd found the long straggly pansy stems and decided to "climb" those instead of the trellis, even though that meant climbing down instead of up!! I've trained them up the trellis instead so we'll see what happens.
Finally, I cut the grass - AGAIN. It's recovering well from the dry spell, I sear I can hear it going "Ooh, water, sluuuurp, ahhhh, steeeetch and grooooow". Recently it seems that only a day or so after its been mown it looks scruffy again - usually coinciding with a wet spell when I can't cut it.
That'll do for now, it's nearly Grand Prix qualifying time - for any smart alecs, yes I know it started 20 minutes ago but by recording it and starting watching half an hour after it started I can usually skip all the advert breaks0 -
Miss Bee comes to visit by Maggie, on Flickr
This bumble bee has been visiting flowers in the caravan most days since the end of July! Usually she finds her way back out through the front doors, but today I had to open the window on the field side to let her out. Usually those curtains are closed, but today I had them open and the sun was shining in. I think that's what confused her.0 -
" the huge disappointment factor I expect to encounter. "
If you expect it, how can you be disappointed? We decided to swap our new Ikea mattress under their 90 day comfort guarantee. This entails two 'deliveries', one to pick up the used mattress and one to bring the replacement. (Does that make any sense to anyone?)
Anyway, Jon is going to be the first to arrive. Between 7 and 11AM. He has two deliveries (or pick-ups) before ours and I can see from the map that currently he's in Scratby. (Who would live in a place with a name like that?)
Don't worry! I know how excited you are about this, so I'll keep you posted.

I've not yet encountered the joy of being informed where the driver/delivery is for anything I've ordered.... I'd be glued to it
But bear in mind that they can be a bit earlier than the thing tells you, so don't pop to the loo thinking "I've got another 15 minutes before he arrives!"(I just lurve spiders!)

Yes, my latest mattress is non-turn too, but it has a very distinctive top side, so no confusion.
It's a relief, because turning the previous one over was very difficult on my own.
I drew a chart so that I'd know whether to turn it horizontally, vertically by short axis or vertically by long axis, each in turn!
Even this one, after its latest airing, when I thought I should turn it horizontally, I started, then gave up.:(
My wrists have started settling down after weeks of discomfort, so I didn't want to risk stirring them up!
Nice and fresh out there today....... just how I like it....warm in the sun, cool in the shade, a bit of a breeze, low humidity.(I just lurve spiders!)

I imagine the delivery person has a van filled with mattresses with the first one to be delivered at the front, and the last at the back. Every time he makes a delivery, the mattress he needs to get out is easily accessible. The collection person can likewise pack the mattresses in to fill the entire van. If the delivery person was also collecting, then the collected old mattresses would increasingly get in the way of the new ones to be delivered.
Having said that, when I swapped mine, the same driver both delivered and collected.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Weather permitting, we will be at the West Runton station tea party this afternoon. Happy to meet any NPs who want to make the journey. (Take the rail bus from Norwich, and step off the train straight into the tea party.)
.
Rail bus.
Is that one of those things called a train?:D
Seriously, though, I've never come across a rail bus. What makes it different from a train?(I just lurve spiders!)

Years ago looking out from overground trains between Vauxhall and Waterloo, I could see an absurdly low-level (two-storey) factory called Bennie's Lifts and Escalators. It was like something out of "the Far Side".
It lead me to discover this interesting technology. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
