There are (free) sites set up where you can upload your stuff/results and match across many systems... I can't remember their names, but they're well known/talked about.vivatifosi wrote: »
The main downside is that they don't have as many people who have done the test so you don't get as many matches as with say Ancestry.
I've seen long/odd numbers being posted about, that have meaning to people who have done it...0 -
You do realise that if you or a member of your family commit a crime and leave some DNA they can now be traced and identified?
I'm not taking the risk.
I'd want them caught.... the alternative is to have them "still on the loose, doing whatever it was" ... and they're visiting you next month!

Doesn't matter. Your IP address will have been logged. Your internet provider can identify you.
Catching killers through DNA profiles on genealogy websites is not something I made up. It's how the Green River serial killer was identified. US law enforcement had the DNA of the killer but no match on the criminal database. So they created a dummy profile on a genealogy website, uploaded the killer's DNA, made a familial match, and narrowed their suspect pool down to one.
You have been warned.

Simple solution - [STRIKE]wear rubber gloves[/STRIKE] don't commit the crime.
:rotfl:
What makes you think I haven't already done so.
In general. I'm quite committed to maintaining my anonymity online. I clear my cookies. I change IP address regularly. Volunteer my DNA to some website? No thanks.0 -

Well, I suppose if someone is a serial killer, or a killer, or an armed robber, or a robber, or a joy-rider, or skips through the station barrier without a ticket, or, or, etc. then maybe they won't get a profile done.
I don't think the likes of moi need worry too much!

You get a portal to log into, and as DNA research progresses, they send you updates to your findings. They are very clear from the outset as to their limitations. I also wanted a European company to hold my gene sequence as the GDPR requirements are greater.
The other thing with Living DNA is that they are doing a lot of work within countries to work out the long term groupings within that country and you can opt in to be part of that research.
The main downside is that they don't have as many people who have done the test so you don't get as many matches as with say Ancestry. However my family didn't particularly go to America, they stayed in the UK or went to the Commonwealth. I think it's about picking the most appropriate firm for individual needs. For example there's one firm (can't remember which) that is very good at testing Jewish ancestry.
The other thing I should mention, is that Living DNA tests autosomal, mitochondrial and Y DNA all in one test (The latter for men only). Most others are autosomal only.
Very interesting. I'm toying with the idea but haven't got further than that. Afaik I'm not from a family of criminals. If I am and they get caught as a result, that will serve them right:A:rotfl:Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
