Catch-up can be a pain, unless I'm desperate.
Especially on commercial channels where you can't fast forward through the ads.
And if the internet goes awol, it all stops.just at the exciting bits!

Catch up often shows less adverts, in fact some advert breaks have no adverts except the programmes sponsor.

I wish I could work out where the birds are managing to get into my fruit cage - I suspect it's where some of the fence "planks" have slipped leaving a gap, but I won't be able to investigate properly until most of the foliage has died and dropped off. It must be a fairly large gap because it's mainly this year's first brood young blackbirds getting in.

It's not helped by the fact that the birds themselves only seem to be able to work it out 50% of the time - they can find their way in OK but can't find their way back out.

Still, look on the bright side - I only need another 21 (at last count) to get in and I can make the pastry ;)

I'm allergic to contracts as well. In fact I dislike monthly payments of any sort.
Some things you're stuck with, broadband, and mains services seem to be all monthly now.
I've got Netflix, but that's not a contract as such, although it's still a monthly payment.
What I won't have (at least yet) is software on "subscription"
I don't mind paying to "own" my copy of whatever, but I'm not paying monthly.

    New PC annoyances.

    1/PDFs
    2/ Image Editing

    ---

    1/PDFs
I cant "Find" text in PDFs. I've used Chrome and Edge. I need to get a separate PDF reader on my PC and save them all then open them.

I spotted a "read aloud" icon when I loaded my first PDF I was interested in - and it read out a lot of numbers/letters. Strangely, I was looking at text and I selected/copied the whole document to paste into a text editor and it pasted numbers and letters and not the words showing on the screen, so something's going on there.

I've tried to do "find" in PDFs on my PC and a couple online - so not sure if it's all PDFs, or just the 2-3 I've wanted to search through.

I often open PDFs 800-4000 pages long and then just "find" keywords I'm interested in. They're often long/rambling books or transcriptions where I'm just looking to see if a particular person or place is mentioned in the text.

EDIT: It's not all PDFs. I just loaded/searched one online perfectly adequately.

    ---

    2/Image Editing

I've installed paint net from getpaint - the stuff built into Win10 wasn't fit for the purposes I use image editors for.

I've used "Sumatra PDF" for years
    https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/free-pdf-reader.html
    Lightweight and fast.
Got tired of waiting for Adobe to load, and (IIRC) it "phoning home" every time you use it, even if you tell it not to check for updates.

The PDF search issue is because windows 10 defaults to not searching PDF contents, just the name. You can change that pretty easily. As an example, see:
    https://lifehacker.com/set-windows-10-to-search-all-file-contents-with-this-se-1733511735

It's completely daft that you have to do this. If I were managing the MS usability team, I'd take away their dope.

Edit: I'm not sure that does it. I'll let you know if I find the solution!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I try to change as little in Windows as possible, and get used to it "as is"
It's a lot less painful if you have to do a clean install sometime like I did a few months back.
The search thing tries to be clever, and to me at least never seems to give the same results twice!
I don't want my computer listening to me. (It can't, it doesn't have a mic plugged in all the time) I don't want voice search. I don't want Cortana. I know you can turn them all off, etc.
    Until the next upgrade.
Things you can't do include changing the behaviour of how files are treated when moved from one drive to another. Pain if you use a second drive to keep your docs in.
And using a default program to open files that Windows doesn't accept as being installed.
    Just to name a couple.
At present I've got a folder stuck on the desktop, that I can't remove. I've tried safe mode, command prompt, and a couple of eraser progs.
"Windows can't find this file or folder"
