A "tonneau" or "tonneau cover" is a sort of flat cover that just fits over the cockpit in an open car to stop it getting wet inside. They have a zip down the middle between the driver and passenger seats usually, so you can keep the passenger side dry in the rain when driving.

Ah, thank you :) Something to add to my vocabulary!

I almost forgot I've got an aircon unit!

About 15 years old now, so a big lumbering thing, but effective!

Because it hasn't got too humid yet, I haven't needed it. Closed curtains at the front and fans have been sufficient in the house.

However, I heard this morning that it's due to get more humid, tomorrow, I think, so I may have to trundle it out at night.

I keep it upstairs, because it's far too heavy to take up and down stairs, and it's more important that I use it at night. Humidity stops me sleeping, and I have enough problems getting some decent sleep as it is.

Some areas are due thunderstorms tomorrow, but not sure where. I do hope we get some. Haven't been able to water my big pots, and some things are dying. :(

I do have a confession to make.... for years I've "coveted" tower fans... and to buy one was always on my list of "dream purchases" ... but I'd not got round to it.

About 2 months ago I randomly wandered into Maplins, as they had the big "closing/40% off" stickers on the window... and randomly grabbed a tower fan (wish I hadn't really, should've waited).

Opened the box and it's four pieces: The remote, the tower, the circular base in two halves. You have to loosen the nut on the tower, then clip the two halves of the base together round the neck of the bolt, then tighten the bolt. Trouble was, I couldn't get those two halves to clip together.

So I've a wonky/loose tower fan that could theoretically be used... except I'm too scared to turn it on in case it wobbles over and breaks :)

He's just phoned. He's not usually open on a Saturday - the man likes to have a two day weekend like most other people - but this weekend he happens to be working Saturday morning in order to have Monday off. He didn't phone on Friday because I hadn't left my phone number when I dropped it off, assuming that he already had it as I've been going there for years. This morning he's made the time to trawl back through his past records to find my number and has just called me. It's fixed and I can have the car back if I'm there before he closes today at 2pm. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

    Ooh, that's a relief! :T

Interesting, though. Shows he should have a policy of checking contact numbers at time of car drop-off, because they can change anyway!

He does usually. Both on Thursday and Friday I was in a hurry dropping off and walking to work.

Pastures, I thought of you on Thursday, when I was walking up my road to my meeting. A boy, about 9 or 10years old, was kicking a ball about , actually in the road, with parked cars everywhere.

I did wonder whether his parents knew what he was doing, and I thought about saying something, but chickened out. :(

It's harder than it seems isn't it ... and, anyway, you're passing, even if he stopped, the minute you're out of sight and he'll be doing it again ... and tomorrow ... and the next day ....

And he didn't even know who you are/where you live and have the opportunity of sending his angry parents round, or deciding to "hate" you and be a specific nuisance.... you could've said anything and legged it! :)

"Oi, !!!!!! head ... stop doing that you scroty MOFO... have some respect .... richard head....."

Kids NEVER do annoying stuff at/around their own house do they, they always go round the corner, or 4-6+ doors along to be a nuisance, especially as they know their parents can't see them from there.

Temperature's been rising steadily ... it's now 77°F/25°C indoors with the curtains having been closed all morning and the window and front door window open to get through draught.

As an "end" I have a window on the side and the door, both of which can be opened and are "secure" in my garden. I can also open the patio doors wide if I wish to... and two small openers at the sides of the patio doors. My "mid" neighbours only had their patio doors/windows (front door at the front and "on a path" so not secure) ... and they put a conservatory over their entire back, so their living room's dark as the conservatory prevents light getting in (east facing too) and it must get BAKING in there as they have no way of making a through draught.

The reality is that there are too many of us crammed into too little space. And the greed of developers has made it worse.
Huge estates with very few green areas, just houses crammed together with as little private space as possible. No proper parking off the street.
When I lived in the Midlands 30 years ago, they built some very nice looking houses on a private development. They were a lot of money.
Detached, but little garden, and you'd have been pushed to get a 25 thou feeler gauge between them.
I read somewhere that if too many rats are kept in a cage they go mad.
There would seem to be similarities between those poor rats and humans.
