Speaking of cold, wet and impractical but enormous fun, the motorbike is now back from it's MOT and some rebuild works - so I shall enjoy it with a large grin on my face until Mrs McT discovers how large the bill was.... and then surreptitiously enjoy it some more while looking suitably apologetic.

Should be able to go and ride a bit more once the weather cools down - crikey it's been hot up here, pushing 30 degrees more than a few times - the last few weeks have made me seriously consider getting an air conditioner in the house for the first time ever in Scotland.

Has it been this miserably hot with all the NP or are we just unlucky up here?

In this country it does not get hot enough for me to qualify "hot" with "miserably". Or not unless I'm inside a car with no air-con, anyway.

I have not been having a good day. Well, actually, I was having a great day until a few hours ago, and then it took a turn for the worse.

I took my car in to my favourite little independent garage mechanic yesterday because it seemed to be leaking radiator coolant. When I picked it up at the end of the day, he said it needed a new seal or o-ring or something like that, he'd ordered the part, and it would be with him this morning. I took the car back in this morning, dropped it off with him, walked from the garage to work, and got on with my day, expecting him to phone me when it was done.

It was a full day - teaching, and my annual performance review, and two different leaving parties for two of my friends - one at lunchtime and the other after school, with some admin work on next year's timetable in between. I was so busy that I didn't notice that the time for the garage to close had come and gone without the mechanic having phoned me.

So now I don't know whether he couldn't fix it, or he just forgot to phone me, or he was assuming I would come and get it without waiting to be told that it was ready, or what. I should have checked, but I made a mistake and didn't, and now the place is locked up for the weekend, and I have no car until Monday.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Until this year I'd have said the same - but it's currently a very humid and muggy 25 degrees in the house at 10:20 at night, and it was closer to 30 degrees inside yesterday...

Given we have the constitution of Polar Bears in the McTavish family anything above 20 is a bit uncomfortable, and 30 is 'try to climb into the freezer' weather!
now the place is locked up for the weekend, and I have no car until Monday.

    Oh dear... That's most inconvenient.

Bit of a change this morning so far.... it's overcast, blowy, cooler. It was 80F until late last evening inside, now it's 69F.... but it looks like it'll be brightening up, so maybe it'll be a scorcher, or maybe not.

Still got my nasty cold thingy.... sitting here with a hot Lemsip for breakfast.

That's a HUGE bummer! I'd be spitting feathers at not knowing.... and calling him all sorts of names.

Re air conditioning. We have a portable unit that we have used a couple of times when the temps go into the higher 30s.

Being on top of a hill, the benefit is that we rarely get still, hot days, with little circulation. A bit of a breeze makes everything more bearable. The investment in materials to make our fly screens has been the biggest bonus. We have our windows open well into the night without any concerns about annoying flying or crawling insects. Wide open all night upstairs.

That's so annoying about the car Lydia. He probably locked up for the weekend thinking "that's not like Lydia to leave her car here, maybe she has another at home".

I wonder whether Lydia has a spare car key?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It'll be locked up in the compound, behind big/tall gates... not stuck on the forecourt, open to be taken - especially as the dirty debtor hasn't paid the bill... he probably thought "Better lock it up, we know what she's like for money, wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her"

I have a couple that I used in the flat - haven't needed them in the house so far, I can get a far better through draught than I could in the flat.

I ought to do that too - I've got a screen over the back door but not the windows.
