I'm back!!! Trip to see sister-in-law actually went really well, and it was so good to be able to give her lots of hugs.

Hope you have a good rest.vivatifosi wrote: »I am the third type of person... wait until the Tesla technology is cheap and mainstream enough to buy. It wasn't the right move this time round, but if I keep my current car for 7-8 years as I currently plan, there is a good chance the choices will have moved on.
Seven to eight years from now my car will be electric. The one after that will be electric and driverless.
I agree. I think it's far too soon yet. Prices will have to come down, range will have to increase, and the infrastructure for recharging improved, before they become mainstream.
I'd like a hybrid to be my next and possibly final car, though, if not a totally electric one. Dunno about driverless, though. I think that's way too far ahead in the future, countrywide that is. Maybe for a few large city centres it will be sooner.
At the moment, though, I like my car. It's only the second one I've ever owned, and was my "mid-life-crisis" car! :rotfl: Like my first car, I will run it until it drops, and then I'll probably keep it to be a future classic car.
My third and possibly last car will have to be ultra practical, though! So electric/hybrid is possibly the way to go. Do they make any with sliding doors?HAMISH_MCTAVISH wrote: »Got it back today with a plethora of new bits attached. (insert happy Scotsman smiley here)(I just lurve spiders!)

I always get a car to take me to airports when I go on holiday (due to various health reasons) and I always sit in the back!
Delusions of chauffeur-driven grandeur! :rotfl:(I just lurve spiders!)

I could just about see hybrids/electrics combined being greater than 50% of new car sales in 5 years, but I think we're still a decade from electric-only being greater than 50%.
I'm currently wary of driverless technology and would like others to take the leap of faith before I do. However there are two factors influencing my decision making going forward. The first is technology. The second is my age (late boomer) will catch up with me at some point and I know my reactions will slow. At that point technology will come to the fore.
Driverless electric raises so many opportunities. If the cost comes down and there is no need for a driver, then rural bus services may once again become viable. Plus the scope for shared personal transportation pods to enable the mobility of the disabled at an intermediate distance...below that for which you need a car but above the comfortable range of current mobility devices. The able bodied being able to take said pod instead of taxi.
These are exciting times. The space race and Concord promised much in the way of the future that have never really been delivered. Now it's as though the stories from those old episodes of Tommorow's World are starting to come true. Whether it's space tourism, the hyperloop, driverless cars or personal jetpacks.

2 to 3 years most new cars will be hybrid or electric.
A slight clarification required.
I doubt that I'll be changing my car in that timescale and I'm sure there will be millions of others who won't either, including those that buy new between now and then.
It'll take a lot longer than 2-3 years to get all the fossil fueled cars off the roads.0 -

I actually think until we get a decent diesel hybrid it's likely to take longer than that.
I'm not looking at new cars at the moment (and haven't seen the latest figures on trends etc) and I'm more than aware that the one I have currently is likely to be the last UK-registered car I'll ever own unless it either has a serious malfunction or is written off though, at which point it'll likely be replaced with something used as I won't get something new for what's (if everything goes to plan) looking like about 8 months.
It's reasonably likely to be my last brand new car, too. Other countries simply don't have the same market as the UK with 30%+ discounts on new stuff.💙💛 💔0 -
I’d love to buy an electric car (being a hippie and all that) but they’re just so expensive as an initial outlay. Really want a Nissan Leaf but they’re about £25k new I think?! I’ll wait 10 years ha.
Speaking of driving - suuuuuper icy this morning all, be careful! Not driverless yet ha!
I’ve just got to the airportFrance here I come! My anxiety came back in full force this morning, nearly threw up and now I’m all angsty and shifty (which probably looks dodgy in an airport ha!) Weird considering I’ve done this before. Guess I am nervous after all!

Nervous flyer or nervous of the whole adventure?
