That's brilliant Sue.
How crazy is it that both you and Nic in the programme last night found an opportunity with teeny tiny organisations willing to take a risk, when it is the big companies and councils who have quotas and supportive CSR policies. It's as though it's just lip service. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? A lot of it is to be honest, they have to be seen to be equal opportunity but the reality is that the larger companies (and a lot of the smaller ones) are always going to take the better candidate and that boils down to the one who is healthy and less likely to take time off.
James only managed to get a part time job at uni when he didn't tick the disabled box, the rest of the time he was getting interviews but then not getting anywhere else and a lot of his interviews covered the issues he has. For his graduate position however, he was completely honest as there was no way he would have been able to hide it during the recruitment process or if taken on (as he was), in a full time job.
They've actually been pretty good with him, his team leader (once he has finished training), is disabled and is already talking reasonable adjustments with him and a suitable chair (from the training room - James' choice as he couldn't see the point in the company paying out hundreds when there was one that was perfect already sitting about), already put by. He's also working on the ground floor so no issue with stairs or evacuation.
Not bad for a major corporate company. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

As an add on, you won't believe the joy I felt when they offered me the job. I just kept going around saying "Someone wants me! Someone thinks I still have value!"
They have since let on that I already had the job before the interview...they liked my CV but it was all down to that part time job that I started when I was 15 and the very dim and distant memory (the current boss was 10 at the time) of how much his dad liked me and trusted me as an employee.
I don't care it is minimum wage, someone wants me.We made it! Well remembered. It was... but I managed to break my addiction.
It used to be an expensive addiction and I was driven to always be looking for where it was cheapest, then driving there and stocking up, then drinking it because I had it! Then being without ... so repeat.
I broke the habit by pure fluke. I had some workmen in the garden and things were going a bit slower than expected, so I popped out to get "some random drinks as it was a scorcher of a day" and ended up buying what I thought was ginger beer at L1dl ... when I got home they'd finished all the job and packed up their van.... leaving me with 6 litres of "random drinks I'd bought for them".... annoyed wasn't the word!
Then I spotted some small print on the bottle "No Sugar" and I have always liked ginger beer, but never found "a good one" - and I opened it and ...... ever since I've been buying the 45p/2 litre bottles. Even flat they're still tasty!
If anybody has anybody coming at Xmas and you want "some random soft drink in case somebody doesn't drink" - I'd thoroughly recommend it; many people love ginger beer and that one's a good one! 45p/2 litres/No sugar .... ideal.
I have, since, bought some Pepsi Max - opened a couple of cans - but it simply "wasn't the same" any more and so the habit's gone. In fact, of the 8 cans I did buy a couple of months ago, I've still got 4 cans lurking around! Cans are good for car journeys though, you can't take 2 litre bottles in the car for trips.0 -

Tip: Never put your bag on the seat - that's how ferals smash and grab them - they're looking for bags on seats to smash the window when you're in a traffic jam.
If it's on the seat, strap it in; else put it on the floor out of sight. If it's strapped in, at least if they do a smash and grab you'll take them by surprise and they'll scuttle off without it.0 -
Re working .... my CV doesn't show "a proper employer" since 2006. And I struggle to "explain" what I've been doing and I can't evidence it.... and all my referees have disappeared/died/moved/companies closed ....and I'm nearly 60. That with a huge dose of "zero confidence" is why I don't apply.
While I can "scrape by" on the £50-60/week income I've got...I'll muddle through. I have improved the income a bit .... not by much, but I'm not very "motivated" as I lost the passion for what I do about 3-4 years ago now, so it all just "bobbles along a bit rudderless". I might even have made £100 last week if I checked.0 -
My CV shows absolutely B-all - because I'm not planning on needing one again0

By the time I applied for this job my confidence was at an all time low too, I thought putting in my CV would have the same result as all the others...nada.
I was even trying to think of ways I could make my PIP payment cover the bills and had plans to live on 10p noodles or a couple of slices of bread a day as the one thing I know my mental health would not have survived was the process for ESA or JSA.We made it!
