What's the worst that could happen if your gate swung open in a storm? It would bang around, but without pretty much hurricane winds it unlikely to fly off both hinges, even if it came unfastened.

My back gate has hinges top, middle and bottom and bolts in the same places. That never comes undone. When I first moved here, I thought "what a faff", but now I'm really happy.

The golden rule with storms is don't go out in them,no matter how much crashing, banging and whalloping there is outside.

It's gusting at 47mph here, from the SW. Whether I hear wind etc is directional - and SW wind is one of those that flaps the vents and letterbox etc. It'll be doing this all night.

    Force 8-9.

Although, all sites show the local area - individual properties can have entirely different readings. I'd like my own wind speed machine in the garden here, out of interest.

was it you or on a different thread, someone posted a map where you could look up.current wind speeds, anywhere in the world. Found it, this one:

    It is strangely hypnotic.

Oooh, I have a new toy to play with...thanks Viva!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Sue, did you see the story about the autistic GCSE student who had lost his place at college?

    https://www.theguardian.com/education/2017/sep/11/autistic-boy-turned-away-from-norwich-college-days-after-starting-course

I saw it and thought it was a terrible shame. Then I thought about how you coped in the face of adversity, and hope that this young man will get the opportunity he deserves.

Not me. I have a strange fascination for weather ... and maps. Dad was the same. It's the speshulness that's driving that, rather than it being simply an interest :)

    I've bookmarked that :)

I actually saw the story before it hit the press as the mum posted on Facebook first (she is a friend of a friend). She was getting nowhere and was advised to contact the press and her MP had been alerted.

Absolutely awful thing to happen especially when the setting seemed to suit the child. A similar thing happened with Joe, he finally found the right setting in a specialist autism school and was going great guns and settled for the first time in years but he was not allowed to stay as he was deemed to have too high an IQ even though he has never had his IQ tested in his life as he couldn't cope with the testing method. He had an amazing term and a bit there where he came on so much but had to return to the mainstream junior school and back to only being able to cope with 4 half days a week.

Weirdest thing was that Josh (who had had his IQ tested medically) would have met their criteria due to his verbal understanding IQ being less than 70 (performance IQ of over 130 - apparently very very rare to have this scope of difference) but he didn't need it and was able to cope no problem at all in mainstream.

I liked the bit where you can click on "gusts" on the left - and hover over to see current gust speeds.

    My area said 50mph.

I think the wind's swung round a bit now as I'm not getting so many of the flapping noises from vents/etc.

I am more protected by the new builds, which is good. Generally there's a lot less wind in my garden - and during storms I'll be more protected than before.

It is VERY windy in the South West, especially coastal, though - unless you've been here it's hard to appreciate how windy it usually is - and how "horizontal rain" is commonplace.

James' determination has paid off, been offered a graduate level role today after a drawn out and complicated application process which has taken over 2 months! He's not been sitting on his bum doing nothing in the meantime though, been doing full time hours at his old summer job.

    Excellent news! Well done James.

My next door neighbour (not the family who've just moved, but the people on the other side of me) has a little weather thingy on his garage roof that measures wind speed and I think some other things too. It is definitely windy here tonight.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
