3/ £310k/3 bed bungalow. The one that dropped to £310k yesterday, still over-budget. Really needs far too much work, say £10-20k to knock it round to base level. So I'll just watch that one.
Why not just offer say £270k? What's the very, very worst thing the EA can do? Say no? Be rude? Laugh? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I don't want to get a reputation with agents as being a time wasting p155-taker.
Do that a few times ... then "the one" comes up and one might struggle to even get a viewing as they've wasted time with you before.
People don't "warm" to me... and I'm not hot. So can't take chances.
None of the current list are vaguely "the one"; they're all "you could do at a push, if I had to".0 -
You're not wrong. In this neck of the woods, and to some extent in the rest of the UK, you need to be aware, switched on and alert to all the costs and benefits of our decisions, and michaels is in the right frame of mind for all of this (he hasn't paid me to say this).
We need to value rationality, frugality, prudence, impulse control, and an enhanced indifference to the "buy everything new now" message the media keep giving us.
Whilst I dislike conspicuous consumption, I would say each to their own...except that the environment can not cope with unbridled consumerism. For a few years I have been very pessimistic about where the planet is heading to the extent that I wonder what we are bequeathing to our kids; we (probably) won't run out of air or food in my lifetime but for them?
Of course there is the digital singularity that will probably occur before the planet stops sustaining humans so who knows whether it is even worth worrying about the environment.
Perhaps it is best to spend it on shiny tech and takeaway food as it comes in that to plan for such an uncertain future.I think....0 -
I remember the first flat I lived in in London.
One of my flatmates was in media and had got invitations from Channel 4 and the BBC. I'd sent close to 150 applications to get a post (these were very bad times), so I was keen to know how long it must have taken to get these offers.
She'd been at Oxford and said she'd got the invites because she'd been sitting next to people from these employers at dinners her college organised.
This isn't a meritocracy, it's something else.
Were these dinners intentionally set up as informal interviews? I suppose the crucial question is whether she was any good at her job?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

To my knowledge, they were opportunities for conversation and exchanges of contact details.
She was good at her job, as were many people (was she the best person for the job- we'll never know). So it goes.
In the western world, your opportunities often depended on your networking, which before linkedin was based on a limited range of (sometimes) religion-based fraternities and in the eastern bloc was based on political party membership.

I noticed this headline:
Greta Thunberg replies to critics of her Asperger's: 'Being different is a superpower'.
Well said, Greta. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

James is currently annoying his partner. He decided he wanted to move from his graduate position so contacted the recruitment agency he connected with just before he graduated. They put him forward for 3 jobs, offered interviews at all 3 and offered a job at all 3, one in a higher position and salary than initially applied for (this was the one he accepted)
The whole process took less than a month (the longest part of the wait was for interview dates).
She has applied for many many jobs over several months and despite being in a more superior position, has only had one interview and that was when James introduced her to the recruitment agency he uses.
The difference?
He has confidence, can command a room when he enters it and isn't afraid to network and self promote where ever he is and actively does so. He also does his research so that he knows not only the company where he is interviewing but also their sector - what is new, how it all works etc, where he could fit in and further innovation he can see. He can reel off information and discuss with knowledge and enthusiasm during the interview process.
James didn't go to a 'good' uni, he didn't graduate with a particularly great classification, neither was it in a so called good subject. She graduated from a much better university, with a First and in a more acceptable subject but crucially, she lacks confidence in herself and her abilities. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

Just seen a "suckers' last call" pop up on RM.
House, brand new, H2B available, £325k. 2 beds, nothing spectacular.
It's just popped up at £260k. They say H2B available .... but they fail to say "This £260k bit is only the 80% bit you can buy - the house is still £325k".
Hate it when they do that, cluttering up my search results. It's a good job I didn't want it anyway0
