Ex-boyfriend wants me to pay back rent

Posting here for the first time in the hope that someone can offer advice. I have recently split up with my boyfriend. We were living together in a flat that he owns. When I moved in, we agreed (verbally, nothing written down) that instead of contributing to the mortgage repayments, I would put the money I had been paying in rent previously (£600/month) into a Help to Buy ISA which we could use were we to buy a property together in the future. This decision was so that I would not be paying towards the mortgage on a property not in my name, and so that I would have no claim on the flat if we split up.

Now that we have split up, he is asking that I give him all of that money as rent for the time we lived together. I am only working part-time and need this money to pay towards the deposit and first month's rent in a new place. Do I have to give him this money, or can I argue that I was not a tenant but rather a co-habiting partner in the house? Thanks in advance.

You've lived with him for free.

Pay him the money (even half) and get on with your life
  • How long did you pay into the ISA ?

I presuming that the £400 that you couldn't pay into the ISA was paid into an alternative savings vehicle?

If you had paid him rent could you argue that you'd have an interest in his property...might refocus his demands!

though tbh if there wasn't a formal agreement between you then I'd ignore him and his requests in any case

He didn't want you to register an interest in the property by paying rent. So you didn't.

There's no case to answer here IMHO.

I paid in for just over a year, with the additional £400 per month going into a separate savings account.

Tell him to jog on, he can't have it both ways. Either you did/do pay him which would give you beneficial interest in the property or you didn't/don't pay him and you don't have beneficial interest.

Ignore him, he has absolutely no case.

Sounds like it wasn't much of a commitment on his part.
Now that we have split up
Perhaps he was motivated by a cash lump sum from you.

Tell him you are now working as a prostitute, and want paying for all the sex he had,

As I've said to others in a similar position, they are "ex-" for a reason.

How is he going to make you give him the money?

Who paid the bills, food etc.?

If he paid everything and you paid nothing I would give him some but not all of it.
