Barclaycard Platinum Travel - Help Needed

Hi everyone,

I was watching the MLMS on ITV last night and saw the bit about credit cards for travel. I am going on holiday a week tomorrow so a bit of advice would be appreciated.

The Barclaycard Platinum travel has no non-sterling fees and no cash withdrawal fees (if paid off in full). Sounds great, as I was planning on taking the card and withdrawing around €100 per day.

But, I went on the page to apply, and Barclay's say:

"Up to 56 days interest free on all non-sterling cash withdrawals if you pay your main balance in full and on time each month"

There was no mention of this on the show. Does this mean that if I received a card today, I only have the free withdrawals until 16th August? Or does a "day" only count when you physically withdraw money?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to apply ASAP in the hope that it comes in time!

Thanks

It means you will be charged interest on your withdrawals if you don't clear the balance in full each month.

You are normally charged interest on most cards from point of withdrawal, so it's better than normal in that regard.

You won't be charged withdrawal or forex fees, whether you clear it or not.

Thanks for the reply zx81. Really appreciate it

I'm probably being really dense, but it's the 56 days I don't understand. Surely that implies that if I have the card more than 56 days, then I will be charged interest even if I pay off in full? No?

    No.

56 days refers to the maximum time between making a transaction and paying it off by the due date (hence up to 56 days)..

As long as you clear each statement in full, you'll pay no interest.

Statements are issued monthly and you have a little less than a month to pay following statement issue, adding these together gives you the 56 days. It is up to 56 days, on average you might get around 40 days, and some transactions just before a statement date will have less than a month before payment becomes due.

I'd say you've probably cut it too tight to get this card in a week, with issue and pin but you never know.
  • Hopefully dont mind me tagging onto the end of this thread.

I've just been through the applying process as I was 100% Pre approved. The MSE website states -
There's no fees for spending or withdrawing cash abroad until 31 August 2022.

Yet the T&C's on the Barclaycard website say - There's a 2.99% Non-Sterling Transaction Fee charged on transactions that aren't in sterling such as purchases made when you are overseas. And if you withdraw cash overseas you will not be charged a Cash Fee.

Now, I'm not sure if I'm just misunderstanding this but it looks like there is a charge on purchases when abroad?

I've notified MSE through the contact section of the site so I'm sure it'll be checked soon but I wondered if anyone on here might be able to shed some light.

I'd post a link to an image with the main T&C's in but I can't post links yet.

    Thanks

The t&cs relate to the underlying terms that apply outside of the promotional period.
  • Ah! I understand,

Cheers for clearing that up, much appreciated !

    Is it this one?

There's an asterisk at the end of the sentence which leads to:

*The 2.99% transaction fee might not apply if we've recently offered you a lower promotional fee.

And quite clearly on the page of the travel card it states:

No non-sterling transaction fees on your foreign spend and ATM withdrawals until 31 August 2022.

I agree it's a bit confusing. I stopped my application part way through while I went back to check I had understood the deal correctly.

The cards arrived quickly and once activated you can see the PIN on the website, so no need to wait for it to come in the post. Hope your card arrives in time for your holiday!
