Easiest way would be to pay it into one of your accounts using the envelope with payslip in the drop box or using an ATM that takes cheques.

That way the issue of joint cheque, single account will only be raised if (a) the cashier notices and (b) can be bothered to do the paperwork to reject it for a cheque of value less than £100. Chances are it won't even be noticed.

It's worth pointing out that whilst people are saying to open a joint bank account:

    Cons
    1. You will both be credit checked - depending on the other person's credit history, you may not even be able to open a joint bank account and will result in a wasted hard search on your files.

    2. You will both be financially linked and if the other person has a poor credit history - so will you anytime you apply for anything because both of your files will be searched.

    3. It can take months for the financially associated link to be removed and updated on all 3 CRAs.

    4. By opening and closing shortly thereafter a bank account, this will dramatically lower your length of accounts opened / credit history age.

We got a cheque once when we collected money for a chosen charity and it was made out in mine and DH's name. He paid it into his account and then transferred it to the just giving page. So it should be fine.

Or open a joint savings account to avoid CRA issues.

I fear that might be quite a hassle, given that neither of us have current photo ID

My husband and I have opened 7 current accounts, between us (some sole, some joint) and have never been asked for photo ID, even though only one was done online.

The cheque being sent in two names is odd though. I thought that all accounts were in just one name .(All ours are, with the only joint items being bank accounts).

Both our names were on the energy account. With hindsight it would have been better if they had asked us which name to put on the refund cheque rather than assume we have a joint account, but the matter is now hopefully sorted. They have put a stop on the cheque and reissued another one in one name only.

My energy company somehow had the wrong initial on my bills for a decade. No problem, until they sent me a refund cheque.
