Cheque with 2 names on it but no joint account

We've been given a refund by our old energy company, made out in the form of a cheque, to us both. The (potential) problem being, we don't have a joint bank account. Would one of us be able to pay the cheque into our own account?
The cheque reads: PAY MR XXXX MS YYYY
and is crossed A/C PAYEE
It's a relatively small amount (under £100)

Open a joint account with your own bank and clear the cheque.
Use the account as a "switcher" for an incentive?

I fear that might be quite a hassle, given that neither of us have current photo IDThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Ask them to reissue the cheque.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0

Ask them if they will pay it directly into your account.
If it's old an old energy account credit balance has possibly been refunded automatically.
Otherwise you could just chance it paying into your account.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

Do you need it if you just open on line with your own bank?0 -

We received paper bills and paid quarterly. I think if we had paid via direct debit they would have refunded the money directly into the account.Do you need it if you just open on line with your own bank?
I am not sure. We do both have an account with the same bank. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Just pay it in to your bank account & see what happens.
It will probably be OK.............

Both of you go to the bank together, with the cheque, and ask the bank how they can help you. Getting a common sense answer from this forum, might not be any use to you.
Having a joint account, links you financially, so you might need to immediately close it again.
Perhaps the company is just being awkward, in the hope of delaying paying out.

Go to your bank and explain. I believe that you probably will be able to pay this cheque into one of your individual accounts.
If the bank refuse, then contact the energy company and explain that you need a cheque payable to only one person. There is no reason why they should be difficult.
I am slightly curious as to why, if you receive quarterly bills which you pay on receipt, how the account became £100 in credit in the first place.
Unless you particularly want a joint account, I would not go to all the effort of opening one simply to pay this cheque into.0 -

Long and convoluted story of our switch to a new energy company, and the months-long to-ing and fro-ing between the two to establish when the change had taken place.
Thanks all, perhaps the best idea would be for us both to go into the bank and see what they say. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
