Amex used to ask you to set up a pin on the telephone. Since Chip and Pin I am not still if they still do.
  • You can obtain your PIN over telephone and on internet with any card issued by MBNA. They have an automated callback system to prevent anyone at the company seeing your number.

And unless I'm very much mistaken, it would be impossible to change your PIN either over phone or online as had been mentioned is possible - the PIN is stored on the card itself
  • We ordered halifax cards just over 2 weeks ago - the pin has arrived, but no cards! Just heard about Royal Mail strike starting at noon too - Bl**dy hell!

Unless you wish to use your credit card for expensive Cash Withdrawals, IMHO you should BIN your PIN and opt for Chip & Signature credit cards or the even safer Chip & PRINT.

By continuing to sign, you can never be accused of being negligent with your PIN if you become a fraud victim. (There are several tales in these forums of this happening).

By continuing to sign, if your card gets cloned crooks wont hav access to millions of ATMs. They can't use a cloned card in most UK shops and if they wish to use a stolen card in a shop they'll have to face down shops staff which increases the risk of them being caught.

Card Fraud UP 26% despite Chip & PIN.

    Change your pin number online?

I could have sworn that option was available, but I must have dreamt it.

No, it seems with virgin you can only view it online, or request that it be sent to you by post.

I think the only options for changing it would be at an ATM, or by request over the telephone.

  • I am amazed any bank would have this sort of service

Part of pin number reliability is no one else can know it, these banks are just giving people a ready made excuse if someone does as well as making account takeover fraud far easier as they dont need to wait as long before getting the profitable pin number

You'd need to know the login name and the password, and have the card at hand to get this information to hand to be able to get the pin displayed though.

There has been slight delays with some halifax cards, due to the suppliers. Should be resolved. The strike only started today. as if ordered 2 weeks ago they would have been ordered and dispatched around the same date

    is it a new account?

I think my card does offer this facility... and i am happy that it is not there.
This sort of thing really is a big security hole .
