The UK does not manage the EU budget though nor have insight in each of the EU institutions. The UK has limited resources compared to the EU's. Therefore better that the EU computes it's demands.

I was under the impression the UK was a major player in the EU and involved in a lot of the EU institutions. At least, if our MEPs ever bothered to turn up. So I'd have thought we'd have a pretty good idea of what everything costs to run. It's not as if it's all done in secret and hidden away from nation members.

What do the running costs have to do with a divorce bill? Other than what's currently budgeted for.

    2 thoughts about Brexit

    - A recent article on the radio about how a well known Italian crime syndicate extorts farmland in Sicily, puts cattle on it to receive big EU farming subsidies.

    - How about after Brexit proper, all Mobility funded vehicles must have at least 40% UK manufactured content?

A sun exclusive so I couldn't link to anything else. And no other newspaper has reported this story yet.
MP Liam Fox demands showdown talks with BBC chief over ‘biased’ Brexit coverage

International Trade Secretary pens formal letter of complaint to Beeb and accuses corporation of ignoring key stories
LIAM Fox has demanded a showdown with BBC chiefs over its “biased” Brexit coverage.
The International Trade Secretary fired off a letter of complaint to Director General Lord Hall.

In it Dr Fox claims reporters have persistently buried good news about the economy since the leave vote. He accused the BBC of ditching positive Brexit stories for doom-laden interviews with pro-EU commentators.
Dr Fox, seen battling Lord Hall in our mock-up, above, declares: “I cannot recall a single time in recent times when I have seen good !economic news that the BBC did not describe as ‘despite Brexit’.”

In his letter, which has been seen by The Sun on Sunday, he claims there is a “clear pattern of unbalanced reporting of the EU economy” and the work of his department.

He cites cases where he says the BBC has “wilfully” ignored upbeat announcements or economic stats, undermining his efforts to strike trade deals.
Dr Fox told MPs: “It does feel like some elements of our media would rather see Britain fail than see Brexit succeed.”

Other MPs have accused the BBC of becoming a cheerleader for the EU and Remainers.
The Beeb hit back saying: “No organisation takes coverage of the economy more seriously.
“We do not recognise the characterisation of our coverage outlined in the letter, but the BBC is always happy to talk with politicians as we always do on a regular basis.”
Two stories Liam Fox says BBC failed to cover
JULY 6: Dr Fox says the BBC chose not to report new figures showing a record number of projects in the UK from overseas investors.
This was despite his team calling the BBC’s economics, business and political desks.
JULY 7: Dr Fox flagged up stats showing exports rose by 10.8 per cent.
Instead of covering the story he says the BBC ran a piece about the widening trade deficit.

The European Union is powerless to stop Britain starting to strike up new relationships around the world, top European law academics have said days before Britain’s trade talks with the United States are due to begin.

Britain’s Secretary of State for International Trade Dr Liam Fox made the announcement that a British delegation would be meeting with their United States counterparts from the 24th of July on live television last month.
Yet new comments by academics including Cambridge Professor of European Union Law Catherine Barnard suggest that not only could Britain forge ahead with negotiations, but Brussels would be in no position to do anything about it.

Speaking to the BBC’s Today Programme Saturday, Professor Barnard responded to separate comments by a fellow law academic, Professor David Collins of City University. In his remarks, Professor Collins said: “The actual fact is, there’s nothing in the European Treaties that do ban the negotiation of free trade agreements.
“I can tell you what is legal, negotiating and signing a trade agreement, as long as it doesn’t go into force before the day Brexit goes into effect, March 2019.
It is in theory legal, there’s nothing in the EU treaties that prohibit that, despite what people say.” While agreeing with Professor Collins that the “unique context” of Britain leaving the European Union left Britain a more free hand, Professor Barnard said Britain going out and seeking trade deals with other nations outside the EU was against the rules. Despite that, she said, the bloc would struggle to enforce them, that it would take “a long time to carry through”, and in any ca, e they may not want to in the first place.
Challenged by presenter John Humphries over whether Britain getting let “off the hook” for this breach would encourage other EU nations to do the same, Barnard replied, “they might”.

EU demands right to child benefits even after Brexit
Brussels talks falter as UK says £30m benefit must end in March 2019
Hopes of moving negotiations on to a free trade deal this autumn have, however, been dealt a blow by a decision by the European parliament to offer its own analysis on whether sufficient progress has been made.

Now who is calling the kettle black? You are the one endlessly posting negatively about Brexit.

I believe that Brexit is wrong. It will damage both Britain and Europe.
I do not believe that the many free trade deals Britain (with a conservative Government driving the agenda) will bring the huge benefits promised.
I believe when Britain has left the EU there may be a slow decline in imports from Britain being bought by EU Country's.
After Brexit, Britain isolated from Europe will lose influence in the world and be forced into an even closer alliance with countries that make our differences with our close neighbours seem trivial.
Perhaps there will be benefits from Brexit but those are likely not to be in the lifetime of the posters on this thread or perhaps not in the lifetime of their children.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

    Two things to this story.

Firstly, the BBC is not Liam Fox's PR agency. It has no obligation to publish the angle that he wants and is well within its rights to give due credence to both sides of the argument.

Secondly, these comments are the latest in a rather worrying trend. Fox has already made comments about the BBC's coverage of Brexit and it's clear that the groundwork for a particular narrative is being set here, following Leadsom's "the media should be more patriotic" plea before Fox's comments.

Any questioning of Brexit MPs is clearly the media meddling with the will of the people - and that's a very dangerous road to go down given that the pro-Brexit lobby is such a fan of "democracy".

Brexit does not have to be damaging to either the UK or the EU. It's really up to the two parties to come to a mutually beneficial arrangement. The UK is leaving the EU and that is a fact that the EU do not seem to have come to terms with.

When it comes to negotiating an agreement, the big problem is that Barmier is not negotiating at all - his brief is to act in accordance with the position papers and has no authority to stray from that. He has 27 different countries to deal with and they all have positions (on issues such as ECJ jurisdiction, for example) which are obviously beneficial to them and would have to be consulted before he can move. Dealing with these 27 countries and a handful of regional parliaments is like herding cats as the Canadians recently found out.

On the issue of ECJ jurisdiction, for example, the UK has offered a neutral ombudsman to adjudicate on cases involving rights of EU citizens in the UK. Now most reasonable people would see that the UK has made a move towards the EU and most reasonable people would think that this is a good compromise. Not so the EU which has boxed itself into a corner with its position paper.

I would like to think that other countries are having a quiet word behind the scenes with EU members and pointing out that any failure to reach an agreement may very well have knock on effects beyond Europe and encouraging the EU to come down off its high horse.
