It's been interesting reading this but a few points stand out to me which are:

    1) the car was sold with only 3mths MOT yet the garage only gave you 2 mths warranty, knowing this would expire before you took it for MOT. In hindsight, you should have booked the MOT before the warranty expired and you might have had grounds for them to pay up ;)

    2) if your friend is a mechanic, why didn't he go with you to inspect the car before handing over the money?

    3) most reputable garages would have sold the car with a full MOT cert and also serviced the car before you collected it. Sounds like you've been caught out by a rogue seller.

Anyway, at least you've learnt from experience now and will know what to expect if/when you buy another car. Also, never go to a garage with the cash in your pocket expecting to buy there and then. As I said before, if it's a reputable garage then they will not let you drive it off the forecourt and will usually arrange for you to collect at a later date having fully checked/serviced etc.

I'm trading mine in tomorrow - my boss has done the deal for me over the phone...

As its done only 2,000 miles, don't envisage any problems, but - although they have just serviced it, part of the deal with six months tax (its not yet two years old so not have to worry about MOT yet), it will be up on a ramp on Monday to be checked out immediately!

Don't care that its pretty new etc. - i want guys I can trust going over it with a fine toothcomb and if there are any problems - its sorted straight away.

Its a tough world out there Poppy - especially in the car trade, you've gotta watch your back! And underneath too... the car that is. I've SO got done in the past, but I know better now. Its all very well having a friend who is a mechanic, but unless you get that car up on a ramp you are not gonna spot things like brake pipes.

Wish you luck for the future Poppy. Get the work done, tyres sorted and enjoy motoring. And put money aside for servicing and repairs for the future - cos they do go wrong, even new cars.
