For those who sell nappy cakes - do you cut out the labels from the clothes/shawls etc that you buy?

I'm not making any profit on my cakes as I buy all ingredients from Next or Mothercare etc........sadly it seems that people want the quality but not to pay the prices.

I've found the primark blankets that come highly recommended on this thread and am going to make up a cake with that. I guess I'm just paranoid that I'll get accused of using cheap ingredients and making a hefty profit when in actual fact I'm just breaking even and even then, I don't factor in the cost of my time.

Customers need to remember that you take the time to make the cakes up, if they aint happy with that then they are not worth having as customers in my opinion!

Brit Chick, I leave all clothes etc labels on as cutting them off looks as if they were bought as sale items etc. The only label I remove is the card toy label which very often sticks out when you try and arrange it. I pop the card label inside the cake.

I don't buy any clothing (much as I would love to)from the more expensive shops. I do the large supermarkets mainly for clothes.

As for pricing - it's like buying a bouquet of flowers from a florist (costing loads) but you can go a buy a couple of bunches of the same costing a few pounds. It's the putting together that customers are paying for.

I am looking for some advice/help/inspiration please.

My friend is having a baby in July, she already has a wee girl who is turning 1 next month. I am making her a nappy cake for the new baby and was thinking of making a potty type cake for her older girl (so she doesn't feel left out). I have bought the potty, pull ups, pull up night-time and a real pants and vest set. I was wondering if anyone had did a cake like this, if they wouldn't posting a picture as I am not entirely sure what I am going to do with it, lol.

    Thanks

Thank you for the reply, I guess I just need to be more assertive as what initially started out as a hobby has started turning into something that I am now selling and I hate asking people for money which means that I've ended up in the position where people have asked me to make up cakes if they provide the materials and I've not even charged them for my time!

You're right about the removal of labels making it look as if they were sale items, hadn't considered that. Thanks.

Last question, how do you get your ribbons to stick? I've made many a nappy cake only to find that come morning the ribbons have become detached (I don't tie bows) I use the supposedly permanent glue dots, but have also tried double sided sellotape. I have a glue gun but it seems such a messy task to use that. lately I've been sewing the ribbons up at the back with a couple of stiches but want some quicker solution.

Have just made up a cake, yet another donation for a raffle prize (I'll never break even at this rate ), mind you, I don't really mind with this one, it's for part of a raffle to raise money for a friend of a friend who currently has a very sick child in hospital.
The photo's are bit on the dark side (was in a rush to get it delivered tonight).
I also forgot today to buy some cream florist to go under the brown ribbon, as well as some brown curling ribbon.
Oh well, it will have to do.

CandyB Wow!!! Gorgeous cake! Love the browns and cream. What nappies do you use? I tend to be getting a lot of creases in mine when they are rolled and yours look really neat and crease free. Do you open them up before rolling or roll as they come out of packet?

Thanks Moonpenny, I think I kind of like the green ribbon with the brown :D , it makes certainly made a nice change from doing the usual 'pink' and 'blue' ones.

The nappies are Huggies size 3, blue and green box (after Rusty's tip of asda selling them cheap). I do open them out and pull them quite tightly.
I usually use pampers size 2, and these do seem to be a bit 'stiffer'. I can assure you, they are not 'crease free'.

Your cakes always look perfect and crease free :D
