    This. Simple as, i have NEVER been able to tighen these enough by hand, always used mole grips after tightening by hand to the max and always managed at least a full turn more which seems to make the difference between "WATER FKINGEVERYHERE, PANIC!" and "ahh, all is good with the world..."

    Sometimes the thread on the tap side is too short to allow the hose to tighten up enough to compress the washer and a second rubber washer packs it out enough to make a seal. Glad it worked.
    Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.
